I'm picking up my brand new 1971 280 SL next week and saying I'm excited falls way short. The car is a 65,000 mile original that has been correctly stored for all of its life in a collector's climate controlled storage building where he housed it along with some other fine gems. Anyway, as I'm a newbee, I'm hoping someone can educate me reference gasoline for this beauty. I understand that the 1971 280 engine was a lead gasoline model and that the lead in the gasoline actually helped lubricate the valves. I also understand that failure to continue using leaded gasoline can cause problems, but as we all know there is only unleaded available at the pumps. Consequently, my questions are:
1. Will using unleaded gasoline create a problem for the engine?
2. Is there a lead additive that should be used?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I did mention I needed an education!
Thanking you before hand from Los Cabos,Mexico.
