Need Advice on Selling
« on: November 17, 2009, 15:52:05 »
I realize this isn't the correct forum to post this, but I sure could use help. Would you advise using e-bay, craig's list...
What are the photos that buyers most need to see. We have considered selling this car before, but are now serious.
Thanks in advance. (Working, automatic, '64 230  sl )- needs restored.

I would first of all make sure that:

- you have a fair and accurate description of your car including all the details (Data card, options etc)
- identify all changes made to it from spec (i.e. new engine, different colour etc)
- take overview photographs to sell the car
- have scanned receipts of major work you've had undertaken in the last 5 years or so
- find and explain, and photograph shortcomings in a very honest fashion... it will actually help sell your car if you are painfully honest about its shortcomings

Remember that most regulars on this site here already have a Pagoda. At any one time there are some people here looking to buy a car, but it won't be a huge crowd. What I'd probably do is put an advert on ebay -- or whatever sales site you are most comfortable with, with all the above information in the advert or perhaps some here in the for sale section. Cross link from the ebay advert to here, and post a message in the for sale section listing your e-bay advert...

3 places:  Hemmings, Ebay and Autotrader.

Photos are digital gold.

Ebay will get you exposure...good and bad (people emailing that radio knobs are not OEM)

Hemmings is $15, and gets the broadest classic buyer audience; I  have yet to not have a sale via Hemmings.

Autotrader is more local, and results in actual buyers, not tire kickers

Craigs is tirekickers/nonsense, ex-for salvage.

Dont be cheap on photo options; saving $15 that will bring $1000 more makes no sense.

Take about 25 photos (all 4 sides, 360 degrees of interior; pull up mats on floors, trunk, and 4 wheel wells), open hood; layout all receipts on a large table and photo that too.

Take a short video of car starting / idlinging, walk around, show inside and guages (oil pressure/temp, odometer); ebay allows videos or you can send to people via email link.

If you dont have a good digital camera, buy one for $150, take pics/video and return it in 7 days.
