Inner grill and other paint finishes
« on: August 04, 2007, 13:04:38 »
What finish(matt, gloss, satin)should be applied to the 2 inner grill pieces? Also what was the factory finish under the bonnet/hood and in the boot/trunk area on a early 68 RHD 280 sl?

Thank you

The finish should be 60% gloss.  Not satin and certainly not gloss.  The factory finish inside the engine compartement as well as the underside of the hood is body color, same gloss as exterior body.  The trunk area is the same 60% gloss black..  I understand that Wurth makes a good black paint in spray cams for this application.

Hello!

Sorry to oppose you here, Pete.

At least later 280 SLs had their trunk (= boot) area not in "satin black" anymore. They were finished in "7164 tiefdunkelgrau" (as far as my number memory is correct), a very dark grey almost black paint code that also my 1971 230 sedan has.

Early SLs are clearly satin to semi-gloss black like all 230ies.
I don't know when the paint code change was made ... during 250 or maybe early 280 production run ...
I remember that at least one of your 250ies is completely original, so it seems that all 250 SL had the semi-gloss black trunk area as well.
