Has anyone else had trouble even getting the non-resistor Boschs? I have tried many places that claim the WR7DC has superceded the W7DC. Even Buds Benz. I have used NGKs for years -- was going to try the Boschs -- but have resorted to the NGKs since I can get them! I have the BP5ES in there -- seemingly about an 8 in the Bosch.

Anyway, thanks for the chart Matt -- and all the other goodies you have been sharing with us. Good luck on the car -- you'll have the bugs worked out soon enough!

I've tried various different types of plugs but have had the best results (faultless) with NGK BP6ES. Even the Bosch ones started to misfire after only a few thousand miles. Current NKG's have been in 6k and are still perfect. I think they have a much wider heat range then the Bosch ones.

This chart might be hard to use these days as Bosch has changed their part numbering system.  If I am not mistaken now, plugs simply have a 4-digit code, such as "4220" which used to be WR9DP as one example.

FYI I agree 100% with David.  Not so good luck with Bosch plugs, I've had the BP6ES plugs in and they "burn better" showing the proper coloring, etc.  Years ago the restorer told me this as well.

I ran NGK B7ES in my 250SL for 36 years.  Every time I tried a Bosch plug in the car it didn't run as well.

A little advice from the experienced would be helpful.

I have a car that, when it runs, runs rich. From what I've read, particulary by Dan and Joe, the cars run rich as they grow older. My engine is no spring chicken (it's actually a 2.3l mercedes engine, but you know what I mean). It also has poor compression but then, it hasn't been driven much and is probably caked up. (Can't find the decarbonising stuff anywhere that people talk about).

From what I read I understand that I should put in hotter plugs to help things along. Dan has mentioned Bosch W9DC's. I have managed to find but 4 of the things in 3 months of looking. I have a newish set of BP5ES plugs at home that I've cleaned up, but they end up black as pitch each time I get the car to run. (My FI pump has been away for a re-do and has now come back with an apparently scary approach to stop the oil building up inside it - something about drilling 2 holes inside to allow the oil to return. Genuinely disturbing. Can't wait to see how it runs and will refit ASP).

Question: assuming a hotter plug will help, what then is the best NGK plug that people feel I should opt for? (Once and for all!!!)

Thanks.

You are already on the hot side of the recommended range (a 5 is hotter than a 6 in NGK speak).  I don't think a spark plug change can cure the problem.  Running the car a bit harder might though.

For an overview on spark plug heat ranges try this link:

James.

I was able to buy W7DC plugs made in Germany in St Paul, MN just three weeks ago at Metric Auto Parts.  They seemed to have a good supply of these plugs.  The phone # is 651 222 7810.  Every where else I tried wanted to substitute WR7DC

James,

hopefully the refurbed injection pump will help with the mixture.  If your engine burns oil, I doubt if any reasonable spark plug will help.  Billions of years ago I had an engine that was incorrectly assembled without valve stem seals.  Oiled up real bad in a day or two.  Took the plugs out every two days and cleaned then with a wire brush.  That sort of thing would probably annoy me these days, but it was tolerable at age 16.

Thanks for the info Matt.  This might be a good candidate for the somewhat overlooked "Database" section.

James, my car ran really rich, even after a f.i. pump rebuild and it turned out that the linkage was out of adjustment.  Joe Alexander, George Davis and others have great descriptions of how to do it.  I tried, but in the end I took it to a pro.  The fuel injection system can be quite finicky.  I would not drill any holes in the pump.  As I recall the later pumps use engine oil with some kind of recirculation valve while the early cars have their own oil supply and dip stick.  You could swap to a later pump instead of drilling yours, but I suspect your problem lies elsewhere.

Gentlemen,

I would not drill any holes in my pump either, but this is after the fact. The chap who did drill said holes is a semi-retired older Dutch gentlemen who, apparently, seriously knows his pumps and even bought some of the Bosch factory testing eqpt when they were getting shot of the old way of doing things 'way back when...'

Anyway, I now have a pump with more holes in it that before it went to get a service, although they're on the inside. Not much I think I can do about it other than hook it up and see how it runs. I certainly don't have the expertise to be able to say 'what utter madness' to the gentlemen who did it, much as in my head when I heard what he'd done I was screaming something altogether more colourful.

Incidentally, I've used Joe's excellent linkage tour to check that and it's spot on. I'll see how the pump runs.

I'll also go to try and find the NGK plugs and see if they do any better.

Many thanks for your advice. I'll report back on the pump, which is clean and has lots of little red paint blotches dotted about it. Perhaps it caught measeles whilst on its trip.

Thanks Bob. I may give them a call, although a lot of folks here are agreeing with my mechanic that the NGKs are the way to go.

Whilst now chasing down BP5ES- of which there seem to be a plentiful supply on the internet compared to W9DC - I was pressed quite hard by a supplier to use Champion plugs of a similar type. Whilst I don't think I will buy them, I wondered if anyone had ever tried Champions or Beru, which I was told by a German supplier to use? (Bearing in mind I'm trying to find a plug that runs on the warmer side).

Hi James,

I tried Champions in a 1967 250SE, admittedly it was a few years ago now but they were hopeless, changed to Bosch and they were much better. I still think NGK's work best though.

The NGK plug should be the BP6ES if you can't find the preferred W9DC.

I've always thought that the NGK 5 is about a Bosch 9. And a NGK 6 is a Bosch 7.

Lower  = hotter for NGK
Higher = hotter for Bosch

Hey Hauser. I think that is exactly right. The BP6ES is the correct plug for our cars. Just as the Bosch W7DC would be. But its my understanding that some older engines like a hotter plug such as the BP5ES or its general equivalent Bosch W9DC (or even W8DC).
