rubber hose crankcase vent to intake manifold

I checked the above mentioned connection last Sunday and found that the little rubber hose (it connects the crankcase ventilation tube with the intake manifold, located right by the csv)had a hole in it and was generally brittle while looking great from looking at it from above.

I told my trusted mechanic about it. He was in a rush and told me this: "Well, good: this is going to give you better gas mileage."

He had no time to elaborate - and I have been wondering about this ever since! Does anybody have an explanation?

Some of the return gases from the valve cover might have been escaping, so with the new hose in place all the gases should be returned to the inlet manifold and eventually be burnt in the engine.

Hey Juergen, my little hose with a 90 in it showed the same kind of wear. Not sure of mileage affect but mine was spewing a little muck which caught my attention. I believe I asked Ray (parts guy) years back and it may be NLA. What I did was wrap it with some black tape. Now the muck goes somewhere else!

it is available. I just called my Mercedes Benz dealership and picked it up a day later. EUR 9.80!!!

I'm unsure about the hose you folks are referring to.

On top of the valve cover, there is a short 90deg elbow hose (1) made of rubber. This hose is connected to a plastic pipe (2) that runs over to the intake and then bends by 90deg toward the front. This plastic pipe is connected to the intake via a little stub hose (3) made of rubber.

Are you referring to (1) the elbow hose, (2) the plastic pipe, or (3) the stub hose?  Which of the three does the part number below correspond to?

This evening, I replaced my elbow hose (the previous owner had installed a bent piece of heater hose), and found some cracks in the plastic pipe. I believe the stub hose was specially formed and is NLA (unless someone knows otherwise). I simply used a short piece of 0.5" heater hose (which I plan to soon replace with fuel-rated hose)

So, anyone have a part number for the plastic pipe? (and the stub hose, if still available)

Hi Waqas. I think I can clarify. The earlier cars had a different breather hose than later cars. It was mostly metal (and prone to rust I'm afraid)... Moreover, many cars have "converted" to the later ones because they are only ones available.

just as info I ordered this 90 deg hose from the local MB dealer yesterday and it was here today.   Price delivered was $5.80

And just for more reference, mine ended up 4.30 plus S&H from Ray. However, it took weeks to get here! (I did have other things on the list which may have held things up.) Bob's next day service from MB is very impressive!
