Vacuum Advance

I was adjusting the timing and found I had zero vacuum going to the distributor. I have a tube that connects to the intake near the air intake going to the distributor. I checked the lne going to the vaccumm boost on the brakes and there is strong vacuum there. Any thoughts why I have no vacuum where I connect to the distributor?

Daryl, The venturi(where the vacuum tube from the dist. connects) tends to gum up.  Can you blow thru the tube from the dist. to the venturi?  If not, clean it out.

The vacuum port is in front of the throttle plate so when the throttle is closed there should be no vacuum in the line until the throttle is partially opened, So at idle no vacuum, open throttle partially then vacuum goes to the distributor,

Depending on the distributor that was designed to be installed, the ports were drilled at different locations depending on when the distributor needed the vacuum, only the 70 and 71 USA models should have vacuum when the car is at idle.

BTW I am pretty sure I checked that there was vac in the line when above idle when we were fiddling with your fuel mixture adjustments.

That's not exactly right. Somewhere in late '65 all distributors used on 113's were vacuum retard;  anything after and including the 051 model. I would imagine the '63 and 64 models had vacuum advance - there were about 3 different units used.

Gentlemen,

There were essentially 5 different distributors used on the 230sl's.

The very early VJUR6BR49T, the 0231116046 and the 0231116050 units were all vacuum advance dizzy's.

The later 0231116047 and 0231116051 were vacuum retard models.

As reported, the vacumm connection to feed the distributor is located just past the throttel valve so there is no vacuum when idleing. The passage for the vacuum is exstemly small and it was clogged. Cleaning it out did alow the vacuum advance to start working and as a result the car runs much better

So, I decided to make sure my little white tube from dist. to throttle was letting air through. It struck me as clogged so I removed it -- cleared it and then... broke it! Very hard, brittle plastic. So now I have to round up a new one. I am hoping its something I can get locally. Anyone know for sure?

I found 5/32" OD plastic tubing at local hardware store that works, but it is black, not white, fortunately the distributor is color blind and doesn't know the difference.

An auto parts house may be able to find vac tubing in the correct color.

Thanks Al. I found something similar at NAPA -- all they had was black. I kinda think it matches the engine bay better anyway.
