670 H - Light Ivory
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:24:34 »
In the July '07 issue of Pagoda World, on page 11, it shows 670 H Light Ivory.  Is this really light ivory?  It looks more like light yellow.

Does any one have this color and does light ivory appear as light yellow?

Thanks!
Bob

Hello Bob,

The light Ivory color does come of as a very rich cream or "ivory".  It has never impressed me as being a light yellow color. Of coarse different lighting (warmer light source) can make it appear more yellowish.  Take your color sample out in the daylight and look at it.

Hi Bob.  Someone had a car in this color at Blacklick and it did look more like light yellow.  I thought it was one of the nicest colors I had seen.  It did look more yellow than ivory to me though.

Thanks Joe & Mike!

The real reason I am asking is that I have a wild hair going to repaint my car.  I never preferred the light beige (181) color and now that I have the mechanics of the car is good shape (car running great since Joe's fine tuning... thanks Joe!), I am looking into a repaint.  Also can't wait to get rid of the extra door molding that a previous owner installed.  Those that went to Joe's this summer, know how out of place those door guards look.

I am thinking about either going with the light ivory (670), the dark midnight blue (904), or black (040).  My interior is cognac, so I think these colors would look pretty good.

What do you think?  What is your opinion?

Thanks again!

The older I get, the more I appreciate the mellowness of light ivory. To my eye, it feels right on a vintage car like a 280 SL. IMHO, the lines of the car get lost on 040 black  Pagodas. I like 904 blue as well, but if it were me, I'd go with either the original color or a light ivory. (And yes, it's not a light yellow.)

For what it's worth though, if you go with light ivory, you probably won't have to worry about painting the engine bay to match since it'll be so close already.

Keep us posted, Bob. The degree that you've fussed over your Pagoda is an inspiration to us all. Whatever color it's painted, I'm sure it'll be done right.

Douglas, I gave Bob the same opinion on the light ivory with his cognac interior. I think black or navy blue will look like the car has had a color change with the cognac and the light ivory will blend well with the cognac. The other dark color I suggested was the dark olive. I have a black Pagoda and the chrome stands out but the design lines on the car seem lost for some reason in my opinion.

Hello Bob,

A color change is a very serious and expensive proposition. You could probably buy a second pagoda for what a first class paint job and color change would cost you!  Your car is very nice already. Removal of all chrome, weather strip, windscreen, refinishing door jambs, underside of the hood, engine bays, underbody, hard top, soft top hatch and dash as mentioned is quite a costly task. Not to mention, unless you painted the inside of the doors, you would be reminded of your old color everytime you removed your doorpanel. Your car could be tied up for a long time. You won't be satisfied unless everything is first class I am sure it will be costly. A thorough color change would require nearly complete dis-assembly of your car.

Hi Joe,

Agree! I am only in the "thinking stage".  If done, it needs to be done right.  I have a friend that owns a dealership here and they have their own paint shop.  I would need to do the dismantle myself to be able to even think about this.  I am meeting him on Friday to discuss.  It may be totally a dream, but I need to check into it.  If not meant for now, I will do this someday.
Thanks again.

Hi Bob

Like most of us, you just cannot stop messing around with your car.  It always, "What can I do next?"  I saw your car at Blacklick and asked you if it was light ivory.  I have 670 light ivory on my car and am also changing my interior from dark brown (essentially black) to Cognac.  In generic terms I would describe it as beige.  Compared to your color, it has just a tint more tan in it but it is very close to your color.  Personally, I like your color.  If it were me, I would leave it for I do not think there is that much difference.  When originally searching for an SL, I thought my 1st preference was 904 light blue metallic but I thought that from photos I had seen.  The light ivory has really grown on me.

As I mentioned in another recent post, my engine compartment was a visual disaster when I purchased my car.  Some of the beautiful engine compartments at Blacklick inspired me to get to work on cleaning up my engine bay along with replacing a leaking front crank seal and doing some A/C upgrades.  Without wanting to repaint my entire car and completely remove my engine (although in hindsight it would have been easier), I decided to paint my engine comparment with Rustoleum.  You are probably thinging that is a crazy idea but I found that Rustoleum Almond is an exact match to my light ivory.  I applied it with both a foam roller and small brush.  This idea came from the post on this site about the guy who painted his entire Corvair with Rustoleum (see "$50 Paint Job").

If you get yourself a quart of the Rustoleum Almond, apply it on a piece of sheet metal and hold it up to your car and you will have an idea of what the change will look like.

Hi Frank,

You're right.  It is fun working on these cars and continuing to perfect them.  I am addicted.  I am sort of looking forward to taking my car apart and getting it repainted (if the paint cost is reasonable).  I will do this right, if I am going to do it, and have the dash redone as well as the engine bay.  I will remove most of the engine and hopefully they can work around the rest.  If not, I'll pull it.

It is funny how the lighting plays on the color of these cars.  When I bought my car in Sedona, AZ. 4 years ago, the color looked a lot more on the ivory side.  Back here in Memphis, on some days it looks almost a flesh tone pink ( :x UUGGHH!)

I have sooo much into my car (parts, labor...) that to sell it now to buy a different color 113, would be a loss.  At least if I can repaint to a color that I like, I can keep the car and know the mechanics are in order and the car is sound, and ....  actually like the color...

I am meeting the painters tomorrow and will look at their color swatches.  Since the light ivory is so close to my color, as Douglas and Dennis have said, it should be a fairly easy blend of old and new.

I will also stop at Lowes this eve and look at the almond rustoleum.

Thanks for your comments.
Bob

I see light ivory as closer to a cream or off-white as opposed to yellow. I had wanted a dark car at first but have really grown to like this "understated" color. This said, I believe some of the silvers offered in these years might look good with cognac, too. My interior is the "early" brown known as bronze-brown.

Hello Kevin,

:) Thanks for the pics of your light ivory 670.  I like the color!

I came to an agreement last night with the body shop.  I found a local shop that only does classic and antique cars.  They do all of their own welding, fabrication, painting, etc..  They have a very nice down draft paint booth.

I have until mid Nov to completely dismantle my car.  I need to remove virtually everything!  They will then flat bed it and strip the paint to the bare metal. They said that they will need the car for at least 2 months.  Then, the fun will start for me to put the car back together again....  Hopefully by April/May, I will have it back and running again...

Watch the "Items for Sale" area.  I will be selling parts to help off-set this BIG expense....[:0] I have many extra parts that I have been saving over the past 4 years (extra fuel pump, wood set, he radiator, starter, lots more stuff...)

I will take lots of pictures and set these up on a seperate website for anyone interested in the progress...

Thanks again!
Bob

It will be nice to see the documentation of your repaint.  Stripped by mid November, you will be working much faster than I am on my car.  I assume you are removing the engine.  Are you planning to detail the engine?  Will you be doing any Cad plating?  I need to send my engine hardware and injection lines out for plating but have not decided yet who to use.  I found one company in Chicago who said they do Cad plating but are not a specialist in automotive parts.  Plus they wanted everything prepared for cleaning.  Mike Salemi said he had good success with Prime Plating in Sun Valley, California.  I spoke to them and they will prep the parts prior to plating.  They are one of my considerations.  It is just that at some point I have to decide when I am going to stop taking parts off the car.

PS. When painting the engine bay, don't forget to mask off your grounding connections.  I used circular stickers that my kids collected.  After you reconnect your ground cables, apply a clear coat to prevent rusting.
