Exhaust Manifolds 280
« on: August 03, 2008, 10:54:33 »
Good day all
Can anyone help me with an exhaust manifold issue, I need the rear half of the manifold (the aft three cylinders) I've been told all 280 manifolds are the same s,sl ,ect. can anyone shed any light on this? I will need a total system soon anyway so if an after market system that doesn't sound to tiny is available that could be an option thanks Tom

Hello Tom

The exhaust manifolds of the W108 fuel injected six cylinder sedans are the same.  Find a six cylinder 250SE or 280SE engine in a sedan (1966 - 1971) and you will have what you need. Do not use the 250S, or 280S versions, the carbureted engine manifolds will not work.

Most people find that the stainless steel exhausts are acceptable, although there is a slight difference in sound. These stainless steel systems are usually less expensive than the originals and last longer.

You may need to look around with some patience. I happened to check on the new price of these a month or so ago, and they were out of sight.

Prices new with SLS are EUR 986 each, or roughly US$ 1,400 each! So as Joe says it's definitely worthwhile to search around for used sedan ones - or a whole used sedan engine for that matter; should cost no more than $500 and you could have not only the manifolds but also a fuel injection pump, starter, alternator not to mention an appropriate cylinder head and engine block to boot, all for the cost of less than half a new 'auspuff krummer' (exhaust manifold)!

I just checked the ebay site. The winning bid was Euro 151 or about $233 USD!! If this is on the level, the purchaser just got one heck of a deal.
