Datacard Guru out there ??

Hello,

Got a data card for my 230SL today, but despite the help of prior posts cannot figure out a couple of things....

In particular, I wanted to find out the original color of my carpet and soft top (now a vinyl beauty complements of the PO).  Any help on which fields to look at and how to decipher the datacard would be appreciated.

There are quite a number of Datacard gurus around here, especially Klaus Drexel and Doug Kim. Myself is a datacard hobbyist too.

OK, you can find the softtop color in the field "wenig gewünscht" (= less demanded). It's a three digit number like 720 (black softtop) or related. See http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_soft_top_codes for the details.

The carpet color is not individually specified on the datacard but goes parallel together with the interior color. If I remember that correctly, there were about 15 - 20 MB Tex interior codes and about 23 in leather or so. For these different interior codes there were a few less carpet colors, let's say 15 or so.
There is a special interior code book in the hands of the MB dealers that can then tell you which carpet goes with your interior.
For instance: for dark blue leather (color 5300, code 220) it was a dark blue square weave carpet until VIN 012466 but a dark grey from VIN 012467 on ... and so on.
So, we first need your interior code up in the first row. I think the field carries the designation "Ausstattung".


It "may" be that you do not have a color code for the softtop. This is for cars with option code 41/5 (I believe), which were cars delivered with hardtop only.
Maybe a previous owner then added the softtop later.

Hi,

Thanks for the lead - I do have MB Tex (116 caviar) which is not in table....  Also originally had a 725 cream soft top - no idea if that means light tan or off white.  Hopefully at some time there will be color tables available some place on the web.  Not sure I would want an off-white soft top, although the Papyrus white hard top is good looking on the black body (sort of like the old chp cars in California, but a bit smaller and with only two doors.....)

Hey Roger, I agree about the hard white on black looking good. I like all the two-tones like that: look very mod and 60's-ish. I have the hard dark blue on white.

My '64 230sl came with a 116 interior which has black MB tex upholstery and a kind of salt-and-pepper weave carpet. Unfortunately, no one makes this color/style carpet anymore, at least I couldn't find any vendors after three months of searching. I've attached a pic of the original carpet (on the decks) with my replacements (gray from World Upholstery.) I opted for the gray to add some contrast to the black upholstery in the cockpit.

I think MB may have changed the color mix of the 116/caviar interior at some time and discontinued the salt/pepper look.

Your original carpet sounds like what I have.  My carpet is in pretty good condition given it's age, aside from where it was glued onto the transmission tunnel (don't know if it was PO or factory??, but imagine PO).  That got torn a bit when I had to remove the carpet to replace the shift bushings.  Probably will retain the carpet until it becomes more of a problem.

The soft top is pretty much shot though, so before toooo much longer that needs to be replaced.  Currently soft top is in a tan vinyl (PO), and the tan looks good on the car.  I was curious about the original cream color (725), so if anyone has a description of that color, I would like to hear it!!

Because you were looking at the Leather table.  Leather codes start with a "2", MB-Tex codes start with a "1".  Here:

How about the code 508, I can't find that option code. It is on my 66' 230SL card. Something about the mirrors I think. I just have one left hand drivers side mirror.

code 508 was for a special right outside mirror required in France.
Was your car originally sold in France?

No the car is US spec delivered. It was shipped to Jacksonville Florida. It has all US spec lights and gauges. The other options are 401, 416, 426, 493, 508, 641, 669, and 727 top color. It doesn't have a right hand mirror.

The MB Club Russia website says that from 1964 to mid-1968 code 508 was for left outside mirror not attached to the door but loose (in the bypack in the trunk), presumably for shipping protection.
