Air inlet or what?

Hi All,
I have a quick question, on the intake manifilod, front end just behind the alternator there is a brass 90 degree pipe screwed into the manifold. It has a screw with a spring in it, seems like some adjustment option. My 90 degree pipe just protrudes connects to nothing, I discovered this because it was sucking in air and it sounded like I had an alternator bearing problem. Removed the belts to help isolate the noise. I finally stuck my hand over it and sure enough it almost sucked in my finger.

I screwed it in as far as I could but is still has some vacuum.

What is the purpose of this?

I will post a picture tomorrow.

The pipe connects via a hose to the top of the air cleaner.  The screw is used to set the air volume at idle.  There was a nice post on the subject within the last couple of weeks.

this post is asking about the idle adjuster screw the I descsribed to you in your other post.

if you get the mb and haynes manual, both will help you understand
the sl much more

That is the 'idle air' adjustment screw.  Adjust it to get the max rpm for the fuel being supplied at idle.  If the idle is off from 800 rpm, stop engine and adjust the knob on the rear of the FI pump(CW to increase, CCW to decrease).  See my reply to your 'Idle speed' entry.  Get to 800 rpm, then decrease 'idle air' to get 750.  This gives 50 rpm rich as the MB BBB recommends.

Thanks folks. In my previous thread, I got confused with the little adjustment screw at the manifold   butterfly.

My car is still being fine tuned an assembled, it was standing for 20 years and the air filter and some items where in the trunk.

Where can I buy the manual for the car?

I just started with the brakes today. Removed the wheel cylinder and caliper.

enter the year,model etc on the drop down and all the available docs will show up.  the cd has a lot of stuff on it, best bang for the buck.

the haynes manual is available all over, check the internet
