the 250sl and 280sl tanks are 18.5 gallons (82 litres)

Mine is obviously the smaller -- similar to Naj's first picture but with spare tire poking out.

It takes just about 17 US gals. My reserve is at least 2 maybe 3. can't speak for the bigger ones.

Note that Bob's gallons are the Imperial type.  In the US of A, the tank sizes are about 17 and 21.5 gallons.

New user to the forum - the gas gauge on my 1970 280 is doing quite a dance; up, down, hold, up, down, etc.  I'm definitely not a mechanic by trade, but I'm not uncomfortable holding a wrench; how difficult is pulling the sending unit for inspection and possible cleaning?

Gary,

Pulling the sender is easy in these cars.  There is a plug in the center of the trunk area.  Under the plug you will find the sending unit.  Here is a diagram of what to expect.  The sender is comprised of a float suspended on the sides by very thin wires.  As the float rides up and down on the fuel level different impedences are fed from the sender to the gauge to denote fuel levels.
