carpet questions
« on: November 15, 2007, 13:32:04 »
Hello All - - I am about to purchase a carpet kit for my car. I need some clarification on type.

What model year did the standard  carpet shift from square weave to loop pile ?

My car is a '66  230SL

Color is a problem as well, I am able to find the M/B Tex in 906 Maroon but not the carpets.

(changing body color from white to anthricite, interior from middelblau to maroon)

For a 230 SL, you want the square weave. But keep in mind that not all square weaves are the same. They do vary in terms of number of loops per inch.

Hi Larry, I bought my German squareweave from Miller's. I think its pretty decent stuff, although Douglas is correct, the quality & weave varies... 10 years ago it was 400 something, now looks like 600 something. My opinion: Grey with Maroon trim, a light tan carpet might look really good.

I am in the process of shopping for carpet for my '66, I have received carpet samples from Millers and World Upholstry (http://www.worlduph.com/). I have determined they use the same carpet, I can not discern a difference.

I have white exterior with the red interior, I've played with the idea of using grey square weave, but I keep changing my mind back and forth between it and red. I think the light grey carpet would look great with maroon as well.

World Upholstry does show a maroon import loop, their number 1478.

I could save $150 - $200 by going with the import loop, but I really like the square weave.

IMHO, the "import loop" or "multi-loop" offered today by most vendors like World Upholstery is very poor quality. It's not nearly as nice as the original. On the other hand, the square weave I've seen is generally okay.

Hey Paddy - From your photos it seemed your original red carpet and  rubber mats would clean up nicely, wouldn't they?
As discussed, few of the carpets available nowadays are as densely woven as the originals.

No, the carpet in my car is badly worn and moldy. The loops are worn almost down to the backing.

When I first ordered my new carpet -- I went with multi-loop for two reasons: 1. it was less expensive than the squareweave. and 2. I was ignorant to the fact that squareweave was the correct stuff for my car. This was pre-Pagoda Info on Demand... You newer owners are very lucky!

Fortunately, my wife said -- and I quote -- "that carpet looks a little chincy -- you should have got the more expensive stuff..." Wow. Luckily Miller's allowed me to swap it out for the Square-Weave.

The square weave is available in red, that's as close to maroon as you're going to get.  It generally looks very good and will run you ~$400 for a set.
