Hi am new to this but looking to purchase a good SL
Have seen a dealer on Ebay whos is advertising a number of reseasonable looking cars
Has any one had any dealings or experiences of this guy

Welcome bill,

You can use the 'search' function on the top right corner of the screen and do a search on 'Schmitt'.

It has come up a few times here.

I spoke to Schmitt and got the feeling that they really were not that familiar with the W113's in spite of their inventory.
Many of their W113's have been in their inventory for many months.

I did purchase on EBay through Aventura in Long Island.
Had the car checked out first by MB of Southampton and based on a good report purchased the car, a 1971 280SL.

Vehicle was very nice, no complaints.
Have been putting additional monies in to get it to where I want it.

There is also another dealer in South Jersey, DiBella? who always has an inventory of W113's that he will finish to suit your requirements.

My opinion is that all of the frequent dealers on ebay are selling mediocre (at best) Pagodas.

Take a magnet to the shiny paint on these cars and you'll be horrified.

The problem is that the spread on these cars is enormous right now. The current market supports a business model built on taking Pagodas that are worth $18K-$20K, putting $5K-$7K into them to dress them up, then selling them for $35K+.

The telltale signs: body filler (revealed by a magnet), new interior kits, fresh paint, hidden inner fender rust, and ridiculously low mileage. Generally, the chrome is so-so, because re-chroming is expensive and time-consuming. When you see that combo, be wary.

I sold a 1968 280SL to a guy from MO a few years back.  It was a  906 blue/parchment combo.  It was my first 280SL. I bought the car from a very nice gentleman who told me that the car had previous rust issues. The price was right and all I wanted at the time was a summer "driver". Although the car looked beautifully restored, the previous rust issues had been serious and there was bondo everywhere. As I said, all I wanted was a fun summer car. After owning the car for a few months many more problems arose. Rather than sink any money into the car I decided to sell the car. I advertized the car locally at a lower price and the ad mentioned the issues and the rust. There were a few interested buyers.  One was someone from MO. We put the car on lift and I pointed out the bondo. He bought the car on the spot. The very next week the car was on Scmitt's ebay site advertised for three times what I sold it for and it was decribed as a "restored, original" in new,factory condition! It sold to some unsuspecting buyer. I called Scmitt and they told me that in one week's time they took care of the rust, repaint and engine!
Be careful with Scmitt.
