The Mercedes sedans of the same era didn't have a vertical grab handle on the drivers door either. The engineers at DB thought it was a safety issue. if I recall correctly the 107 sl's didn't have one either.

Excellent question. I always thought that was weird. There's nothing to grab onto on the driver's side, except the armrest. And if that's acceptable, why not let the passenger use his armrest for pulling the door closed too?

Maybe the door handle is for passenger stability during cornering since the driver has the steering wheel. Just a guess, some older cars had a similar handle on the dash.

The earlier 230SLs actually do have a driver's side grab handle.

My '64 has only the passenger side grab handle (#1515 built in Jan 64 for the US market), perhaps this was a design change between James's November 63 and my Jan 64?

I think you can blame Mercedes for that too...

How come there's always so much month left at the end of my money?

“But it’s my money as well” regular quote by Mrs Brough.
Anyway, I used some of the above to fit a grab handle on my drivers door which works well but, if you think of doing yourself, just check where your throttle knee will rest as it could get in the way and be uncomfortable due to the lack of space.
