1964 230SL Manual transmission.

Hi,

Would anyone be able to tell me whether the 4 speed manual transmission was shared with any other chassis? W110/111 or W108/109?

Do a search on "4 speed" and you will find some information.  As I recall our manual transmissions are similar to the W110 and W111. What are you trying to do?

I'm an R107 man myself, but a friend is preparing their 230SL for sale, and the gearbox has gone. They don't want to spend $3500 on getting it rebuilt.

I'm sure I can find a W110 or similar donar car witha  good 4 speed box.

So long as i know it fits.

Hello Shane,

Yes most of the standard gear boxes are basically the same.The first gear ratio varies a bit. First gear ratios of 1 to 4.42, 1 to 3.96 and 1 to 3.64 were used during the era.  You may have to change two bolt off items,  If the sedan box is a column shift, unbolt your original top cover and use it on the sedan box. Also the rear cover may have to be changed. Some sedan speedometer cables, exited the rear cover in a different spot. No big deal here. Make sure the box is off a Finback, Mercedes sedan W111 or W110, or the very eariliest W108s, after around 1968 the entire design changed and the newer version standard transmissions had  three shift rods on the side of the transmissions.

What is the problem with the 230SL transmission?  I think they are very robust and durable.  Shop araound for a better price for the work.

Ok, so you might want to simply purchase a used one outright (1x shipping instead of 2x). Look into surface freight.... you might be pleasantly surprised (or not). Ask Cees about his umpteen engines he's had shipped from the US to Europe for very reasonable rates.  There's no harm in getting more details, but then again time is money too.

I understand your geographic challenges, but can you relay to us the specific problems with the transmission?  Maybe some good advice will pin-point the problem and reduce the work needed to revive the transmission.
