THEORETICALLY and LEGALLY, the copyrights on various Star Articles vary. Also, the Star management has changed.
For example, I once checked with Frank Barrett (FORMER editor and publisher) about getting the legal rights to re-publish Gernold's article on Restoration of the Hard Top. Here's what he said:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Michael:
Reprinting the article will require a couple of simple things:
1) that you obtain the permission of Gernold Nisius and the photographer or artist (we had only one-time rights).
2) that you send us a copy of the current issue of Pagoda World now plus a copy of the issue with the reprinted article,
3) that with the article, the magazine should print the following credit prominently:
"This article is reprinted with permission from The Star, the national magazine of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. To join MBCA, see
www.mbca.org or call 800/637-2360."

So you see, there might be different rights depending on the author; the photographer, or both; if they are dead it might complicate things, that is, if one is to want to do it legally. Further I don't know if the "ownership" changed when Frank left, and when the MBCA took over itself. It's complex. For example, who owns the rights to the old stuff? Frank? The MBCA?
Fair use is an entirely different animal. I have the magazine reprint in question and I
just might scan it all soon to pdf's....
