The Star Technical Reprints
« on: January 09, 2008, 20:33:52 »
Does anyone who is a member of MBCA have a copy of The Star magazine's Technical Reprints No. 1?  The Star published three technical reprints (Nos. 1,2,& 3).  They are still selling Nos. 2 & 3, but no longer have available the No.1 reprint.  I am up dating my library.  If anyone has a copy of that reprint I will be glad to pay for cost of printing and mailing.
Thanks

Sounds great to me, too.  If any copyright issues do not prevent it.

As long as you are not  making copies for sale or publication,  I would assume there is no problem.

I was always under the assumption that just making copies was an issue.  Hence the term "copy" "right" - the right to make copies?  Again, not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV.   ;)

Reality check for Star and MB---   The Pagoda SL Group and other similar groups have done for them what they NEVER EVER could have done.  Financially, public relations, image, marketing, ___fill in the blank, etc.   Doing their advertising, they should welcome and supply us with the reprints.  Mustang, MG, Chevy, Mopar, etc parts are a helluva lot cheaper the MB's.  MB and Star you want me to go there?  (Have to ask the rhetorically question.)

THEORETICALLY and LEGALLY, the copyrights on various Star Articles vary.  Also, the Star management has changed.

For example, I once checked with Frank Barrett (FORMER editor and publisher) about getting the legal rights to re-publish Gernold's article on Restoration of the Hard Top.  Here's what he said:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Michael:

Reprinting the article will require a couple of simple things:

1) that you obtain the permission of Gernold Nisius and the photographer or artist (we had only one-time rights).

2) that you send us a copy of the current issue of Pagoda World now plus a copy of the issue with the reprinted article,

3) that with the article, the magazine should print the following credit prominently:

"This article is reprinted with permission from The Star, the national magazine of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. To join MBCA, see www.mbca.org or call 800/637-2360."

Frank Barrett, Editor/Publisher
The Star
1235 Pierce St., Lakewood, CO 80214-1936 USA
303/235-0116, fax 303/237-6080
----------------------------------------------------------------
So you see, there might be different rights depending on the author; the photographer, or both; if they are dead it might complicate things, that is, if one is to want to do it legally.  Further I don't know if the "ownership" changed when Frank left, and when the MBCA took over itself.  It's complex.  For example, who owns the rights to the old stuff?  Frank?  The MBCA?

Fair use is an entirely different animal.  I have the magazine reprint in question and I just might scan it all soon to pdf's.... ;)
