When I bought my 1971 280sl last year I was a little disappointed that the previous owner had removed the radio, placed an alpine am fm with cd player and had actually put 2 speakers into the storage area behind back seats and in trunk he had installed an amplifier. I am wondering if I could somehow put in a Becker that could have access to ipod and perhaps keep the speakers now that they are in. If I remove speakers I will need to recarpet the storage area. The other option is to just leave as is but the alpine seams so out of place. Any thougts? Thanks.

Michael,

I have a Becker Europa 2 (a stereo radio that is newer than my '66 230SL). I have purcahsed from Konigs in Germany a lead that plugs into the back of the radio which has a 3.5mm jack for an MP3 player. Copying another member, I have brought this lead from the back of the radio, along the transmission tunnel under the carpet, and into the ash tray where it sits when not used. When I want it I just pull out the jack and plug in the player. Alternatively, I understand an Ipod nano will fit in the ashtray.

I am currently planning to put a small amp under the drivers seat to provide better sound with the top down. My speakers are in the footwell an I have no plans to install others. Depending on the amp in your car, you could run an mp3 player direct to the amp, or just run it from the radio you purchase assuming it has the spare 7 pin jack at the back. I would keep the amp.

One more thing, if you are going to change your radio for an original, note that again depending on the amp, you may need to by a line converter (about $15) as the Becker radios do not have pre-amp RCA outputs. Instead, they have speaker outputs. It may be worth checking the specs of your amp to see if it accepts speaker inputs (also known as high level, i.e. amplified, inputs).

Hey Michael, I have done something similar to James Howard. I fitted a Europa II and have an ipod-friendly cable plugged in the back. I chose not to route it all the way to the ash tray -- instead I have the plug just under the dash. Then I connect ipod using a short extension cable and tuck it between my brake sleeve and the trans. tunnel. It works great and I find its with in perfect reach to turn on/off, adjust ect.

PS -- guess I wore out the brake pedal! That's a good thing  :)

Hi michael,

When I bought my Pagoda she came with a tape cassette player and similar speakers to yours in the back...
Cut a long story short I wanted the Becker radio back, and what with the mobile phone laws here & wanting to connect an ipod + Sat Nav etc, I opted for the Becker 7948...Ipod connector in the glove compartment, + voice recognition + phone hands free + Sat Nav all built in .
I am using the same rear speakers & also managed to use the front top speaker as well .
Quite a splash out, however I think it was worth it as I don't like a lot of clutter to spoil the lines of the interior.

You can change the colour of the Radio face to the colour of your interior!

Phillipe,

These Becker dealers are always at the Techno Classica in Essen.

A good excuse to come this year [:p]

thanks again to all of you!

Actually, I find myself in a great dilemma: my current radio is a grand prix , and works great.BUT it's a european version, i.e limited to the 88-103 Mhz range, which means I'm missing many radios between 103 and 108 Mhz. :(

I'd love to purchase a US Europa stereo (up to 108 Mhz), but they tend to be pretty rare on the market. And I still can't tell the difference between the europa and europa II.I suppose the later one has the built-in amplifier (?)instead of a separate unit.

On some pictures I could find, there seems to be different keyboard versions, with either 3 or 4 FM preselection keys.

Another option would be the Mexico cassette "vollstereo",  which I could get from König in germany, though a bit pricey... and I don't know whether it's a single or two-pieces unit (separate amplifier). How about the output power? Is it greater than the europa's?

And yes, Naj, you're right.I definitely have to go to Essen, it looks like the Meccah of all oldtimers addicts!
