MB Tex
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:36:18 »
I recently decided to change the horsehair seat pads in my 68 280SL. The seat bottoms were "saggy" when you would sit in them. I had hoped to re-use the original MB Tex, which still is in very good condition.
However, when removing the pads we found that there was some factory adhesive between the Tex and the cushion, making it impossible to separate without damaging the Tex.  All of the original factory markings and the factory tags were still on the original cushions. (I took photos for future reference). Has anyone out there successfully replaced their seat cushions without running into a problem with adhesive? Also, was all MB Tex for seat cushions made with the pin holes for ventilation?
Thank you,
John Mancini

Was it adhesive, or some beverage spillage that soaked through the seams and became a bonding agent??

Rodd,
I'll check it out more closely and let you know.

I only asked because I don't recall reading about this issue previously.  Several people on the forums have replaced their pads and reused their upholstry, but I don't recall if that was Tex or leather.

There was no adhesive when the cushions were replaced in my 1971 280SL. Possible that a previous owner wanted a "tight fit" and glued the cover to the cushion.

If it is adhesive or something similarly sticky, maybe the 3M product for removing glue will help separate the parts (if it's a spill, maybe warm water will help.

Perforations for better ventilation were added to the seats in mid-250SL production.

In case it will help, here's the Tech Manual section on replacing seat cushions (nothing about adhesive):

The pad has just broken down over the years and the Tex is stuck to the pad in certain areas. As soon as I can get the photos uploaded I'll post them. It is all original and the tags are still on the pads with MB parts numbers.
