Daytona 500 graphic,

Interesting graphic on the 500 coverage-showed rpm, speed, position, etc.  RPM was 8000, speed was 190 + or -, etc.  How long does a Daytona engine last at 8000 rpm?  How long would a Pagoda engine last at 8000 rpm?  Much difference?

A race car engine at that level of competition is desinged to run for 510 miles. After the race is over these motors are discarded, not rebuilt. They calculate this so closely that after completeing the qualifying laps the driver shuts off the motor and coasts into the pits.

I imagine that a completely new (not rebuilt) sl motor after a proper break-in run could run for 500 miles at 8.000 rpm before turning int a hand grenade. But why would any one want to try this? 5800 in 4th gear is about as tight as I ever got a stock 127 motor to rev I was too busy at the time to notice the speedo reading.

Al et al, I guess what you're saying is-Mercedes built a pretty good stock engine........   Mine rarely see 3500, so should last a long time.
