that's a noise i'm hearing from under the car; it gets faster as i speed up. any suggestions about what might be the cause?

I once had a similar noise that turned out to be a garbage bag that I ran over. It somehow got sucked up and wrapped around the driveshaft......

thanks. i checked that, but there's nothing on any of the axles or drive train that i can see. i did notice that what i believe is supposed to be t he housing around the fuel pump has had the back and bottom raggedly cut away...???

We need more of a description of the noise and any clue as to where it might originate.  Is it to front or back?  Is it to left or right?  Any vibration associated with it? Can you get under the car to see the flex disc?  If the flex disc is failing, you could be two miles from disaster.  Do you have a belt separation in a tire?

John, You need a session at PUFR-Pagoda U at Fox Run(puffer).  Could be anything vehicle speed related-tires, propellor shaft, flex disc, tires, tranny, debris, brakes, etc.  What does it sound like?

As you speed up and the car shifts gears (and RPM lowers), does the sound continue to go faster or does it drop with RPM?

Does turning left/right affect the sound?

Does it happen in reverse?

Does it happen with brakes applied or when coasting?

CONTINUES TO GO FASTER AS I SHIFT THRU THE GEARS FROM 1ST TO 4TH;

what/where/when is PUFR-Pagoda U at Fox Run?

sounds like something turning, not hitting; it has a smooth rythm that spedds up as i go faster and slows down as i slow down.

the sound is coming from right under me in the center; no vibration.
i cant get under to see the flex disc, but since i bought it in sept 07 the car has been thru 3 inspections, and a full service by a mechanic who specialises in old mercedes, and the flex disc has not been mentioned.

Maybe a hole in the muffler or exhaust system?  Just a thought.

The only clue I had to be anticipating something was amiss was a "rubbing/thumping" sound as I started up from a traffic light or two.  The frequency increased and then went away at speed.  I was doing about 65 down a highway when the rubber pieces on my flex disc started leaving the scene.  The sound of bits slamming against the tunnel was startling and I saw chunks of rubber hopping all over the roadway in the rear-view mirror. I was at a constant speed and only four corners from home, so I made it there, very gently, on the remaining cords.  

If your sound is coming from the transmission/driveshaft tunnel, I would not drive the car unless your repair shop is very close, and be very, very gentle with the clutch.  Just have them put it on a lift and look.  If you see white cords, park it until repair.

John, PUFR is at 3857 Fox Run, Denver, NC on Lake Norman.  No one has graduated from the University, but the students are studying diligently. Kinda ongoing education.  It has resident 230SLs - one ambulatory and one not.  The 'not' is in various stages - awaiting engine repair or transplant. Ain't medical science terrific!
