Thanks

Bob,

Oliver Dare in Elk Grove, CA makes a repro strap for a Pagoda. I purchased a black one from him probably 10 years ago, but he can make one up in brown as well. He uses the name nickel-plated hardware that he uses for Gullwing luggage. e-mail me for his phone number off-list if you're interested.

Michael,

Like Patrick describes, you place your maximum with Phantom Bidder and it doesn't start bidding until the last 10 seconds.  They also send you an e-mail if the bidding has already exceeded the maximum amount you requested.  That gives you the opportunity to increase it or at least realize the item is beyond your original expectations.  Look into it...I really like using it!

Hello All,
Thanks for not beating me up to badly about separating the car from its babies...

Michael - thanks for the initial bids, I was pretty surprised that it ran up over $2,800 in the first hour.  As much of the discussion indicates, most of the time, bidding does not get rolling until the end.  I have bought hundreds of items on Ebay, this is my first sale attempt.

Bob - I can send you photos and dimensions.  Give me a couple of days, work is very busy right now.  You can email me at johninvt@comcast.net to remind me if I don't get to you by next week.

With nine days to go, here's hoping for enough to complete my list of projects by Spring!

Take care,

John

John,

Are you at liberty to say who purchased your luggage? Just curious who the lucky new owner is & if it's anyone in the forums.

I believe the last set of a five piece luggage set went for $5k so this was actually a very nice payday.  Congrats on the sale.

I hope the new owner will treasure these peices of luggage as a peice if history that is no longer with in our grapsh. It was a time  of excellance  and class that Mercedes-Benz and many other marques put their own signatures to. Many of the wealthest and well knowen tycoons in history, business and acting  have enjoyed these fine accessories, so please let us not for get their rarity now. For as Henry Royce once said "long after the price has been forgotten. The quality will remain."

Bob,

I agree that the luggage is neat to own for the novelty, but to be quite frank, it's not that nicely made. If Henry Royce had seen it, he would've cringed. By the 60s, the Mercedes luggage had been dramatically cheapened since the Karl Baisch days. It wasn't custom-fitted for each vehicle and it wasn't even leather.

In other words, "Long after the price has been forgotten, the naughahyde will endure."  :)

I think we are all missing the boat people. first Mercedes-Benz was smart to make soft sided luggage unlike the 300SL the selection of soft sided luggage encorage more tourism of European delivery owners to explore Europe and fit a lot more luggage in the trunk and on the optional roof rack.
sure its not the best make most expensive luggage, but if I could go back in time I sure would of paid for all the luggage peices four times over. I would of liked that luggage because I am a pure enthusiast, but I also am not in the leege of some of our more afluent members and able to bid big bucks.
Look at the price it sold for!! thats gotta say something for luggage not to some of our taste.
I could of had new bumpers and still money in my pocket and I am talking Orginal equipment not the crap knock offs on ebay.
