Fitting Gas Struts to Front Hood / Bonnet

Hi, Has anyone fitted Gas Struts to the front hood/bonnet, of their SL? If you know of a conversion kit, who supplys them? Or has anyone carried out such a conversion. Any photo's of such a conversion would be a great help. Thanks Chaps.

Hi Naj,

Ya this helps, any idea of type of gas strut used? and would you have a photo of where the bottom end of the strut is fitted?

unless you are thinking of putting an early 4.5 liter V8 in your SL and to modify the hood bulge to clear the air box and bigger radiator, I cannot see why it would be needed. Even the early expermental 6.3 liter pagodas were not using gas struts to open their hoods.
Thats a pepboy modification.
Does any one remember the salvage yard in Sunland valley? The owner pulled an Eric Waxenburger and put an early 4.5 liter V8 in his 280SL and only by the rumble of the exhaust did you get a hint it wasn't stock.
however had Mercedes-Benz been left to continue the Pagoda and not meet the new crash laws in the USA, we might have seen a V8 350SL in a W113 chassis.
Leave it alone. A  light twist of the wrist and thunk the hood is closed like it is supposed to. No drama, just good German engineering.

Glad to see that 2 cents has turned into 2 dollars...soon be on holiday!

Yeah, but what's a dollar worth nowadays ?

Also, I think it indeed a little over the top to fit a completely new engine to make room for the gas-strut...
