Hello,
Can I get some information from those knowledgable as to where on a 71 280sl with optional light in automatic shifter. My question is where exactly if any diagram shows does the live and grounding wires attach? Can you send or post copies if have? Thanks, Jason

If I remember correctly, the live wire goes to one side of the light bulb and the ground goes under one of the mounting screws for the shifter box.

Which end do you have in mind, bulb end or the other?
The bulb sits in a housing to which the wires are attached.
The brown wire goes to ground (pick your spot)and the other one should be long enough to reach a hot connector on the lamps in any of the instruments or the clock.
