Installing Oil Cooler ??
« on: September 19, 2003, 10:06:31 »
My body shop removed the radiator that sits in front of the water radiator. This must be the oil cooler or a/c condensor (not the smaller rectangular one below the bumper though). It sits in front of the main radiator, but since it is disconnected, I have no idea how to connect it back. Is it bolted to the water radiator ?? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello SD,
That is also a AC condensor. Most W113 cars had both one in the bumper and one in front of the radiator. The factory oil cooler is the skinny verticle unit attached to and next to the radiator near the battery. The top oil cooler line (black rubber) runs nearly over top of the battery. Look for the cooler drain plug directly below when doing oil changes.

Joe,
Thank you for the info, do you know how that a/c condensor is installed? It is currently just floating in front of my radiator, and since I did not take it apart, I have no idea how it is connected and to where???

Could someone take a pix of how this cooler is attached to the radiator?

Hello SD,
I am do not quite remember, but I think there may be a sheetmetal flange on each side of the condensor and it attaches to the radiator with some Phillips screws?? If I recall the radiator does not have to be removed but you may have to loosen its mountings so you can reach all the attachment points. Maybe you could take a good look at the condensor and let us know what you see as far as mounting holes.

Re: A/C Condensor in front of Radiator:
I have been to 2 M/Benz dealerships, flagged down two 230/280sl's in town (resulted that they did not have a/c), and so far have been helpless in trying to re-mount the a/c condensor in front of the water radiator.

The dealers mechanics don't remember how to do it, and the dealer books do not cover dealer installed options (such as the a/c system).

How difficult can this be ??If anyone knows how their condensor is mounted, please let me know.

The condensor has no mounting hardware on it.

I will try and import photos to show that my a/c condensor is about 2 inches narrower on each side and also not as tall as the radiator, therefore there is no place to screw onto, other than directly into the "fins" of the water radiator.
What is wrong here????

My car doesn't have a front mounted oil cooler, but perhaps you can have tabs soldered to the sides of the frame to align with mounting points at the radiator?  Just a suggestion.

Good luck,
Tom
