Part Number Please!
« on: April 20, 2008, 21:48:39 »
Pretty sure this is a new one: does anyone have a clue what the part number would be for the teeny-weeny screws that hold the soft-top case chrome strip? I see them sold as a kit on SLS but I only need two or three! (anyone have a couple laying around?)...

The screws are itemised separately on the SLS drawing (Page 75 Bonnet)
Item 33, part no 299033 €2.90 each
Item 34, part no 299034 €2.57 each

MB part no. 000 990 1833 (I don't know which one of the two that is)

Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I thought this decor strip was fastened with studs into the strip and was afraid of forcing the seized nuts.

Thanks Anfinn. Yes Alfred those are the ones. (got any extras?) I was glad to see they were not studs as one of them snapped on me during removal. I am also missing a couple.

James,
these are really tiny 3mm screws and tough to find with a square head. On my car there were screws with three different lengths (see picture). The shortest two were on the outsides, the middle ones next, and both required a M3 nut with rubber washer.  Then six long ones which need special rubber covered 3mm "packing nuts".
Interestingly, the part book shows only two types of square head screws (p/n 000 990 1833 & 113 990 0033) and I believe that these are the "long" and "middle" lengths screws.  I am puzzled why my car had 3 types - and I am pretty sure that these are originals.
Anyway, I am surprised that you don't need to replace the packing nuts. The rubber on mine was very brittle and broke into pieces.
If you need any of the items, call Dave he has them. I have only a few 3mm nuts and rubber washers left that I can offer.

I needed a set of these screws a couple of years ago when I had to refinish my soft top cover.  I seem to recall that there were 10-12 screws in at least two lengths.  The kit was available at the M-B ealer across the street and they had it the next day, cost was under $10.  Sure beat cleaning up and trying to reuse the remaining originals (quite a few snapped on removal!).  The tips of some of the originals were ground off to prevent possible damage to the top material - that may explain why there appear to be three sizes of screw.
