Tank Re-installation
« on: April 25, 2008, 08:39:52 »
I'm about to re-install the refurbished fuel tank on my '65 230 SL.  There was a gasket that went between the top of the tank and the underside of the trunk around where the filler pipe go up through the trunk.  I can't find a direct replacement for this gasket.  Can anyone suggest the best solution for fabricating something?

Thanks,
Drake

Just out of curiosity, what process did you use to refurbish your tank and are you happy with it?

Wallace,

I used the Gas Tank Renu system done by a Renu dealer (gastankrenu.com) here in MD.  The tank looks great and their service was excellent (and fast...just 2 days).  Also saved 10% on labor with AAA.

I'll post the results once re-installed.  If satisfied I may have them restore my radiator, as well.

Drake.
Look under fuel parts with Miillerbz, they may have one. At one time, I just used "Great STuff" from home depot, it expanded and filled the gap. Nobody sees this. If you have  a show car it is a different story.

I had my tank done by a Renu dealer in Houston, it turned out great.

Finished the tank re-installation...I ended up using weatherstripping and form a gasket to reseal the opening around the filler pipe (worked great).

The Renu'd tank looks and works great.  Car fired right up on it's first drink of clean fuel in a loonnnggg time.
