So what are you supposed to do with the hood spring when you take off the hood? It seems primed to take the paint off the edge of the hood as it unwinds.

That is why you should use an 's-hook' to grab the spring and secure it to the hood itself, until you are in a better position to 'unwind' it. Same thing happened to me first time I removed my hood. Damn near took my fingers off! Luckily, my fingers lived to tell the tale...
