Are my wheels period correct?

Can an expert tell me if the wheels on my 67 230sl are period correct? The seller said it was an original option at the time but other people told me this wheel model only came later. The hub is white and apprently that may not be original. I don't what to believe anymore.

Your rims are period correct for the late 60's/early 70's era but I don't believe that they were available as an option until around 1969 or so. Still, if you owned a 113 back at the time, one way to give it a sportier look was to purchase the "bundt pan" rims as these are sometimes refered to.  Personally, I think these rims on your car do not detract from the appearence. The center cap should be silver like the rest if the wheel, however.

Hi Rene. What color is your hard-top? That would tell you what color the center rims on the original 2-piece rims would be.

Kevin is correct. This style wheel is correct as an option on the later W113. I agree, the center caps would look much better in the original silver color.

The bundt style wheels are correct from late 69 on according to the MB judging sheets. I am highly biased, and like the dog dish style hubcaps and trim rings of the early cars (guess what type I have?)

I just checked—the word "bling" does not appear even once in the 1967 Optional Equipment brochure. (Note: Polished bundts.)

Wow , this is very helpful. I am proud to be part of this Pagoda Group!
My hardtop is white but I am not absolutely certain that it is the original one.

I will see if I can have the center piece harmonized with the ploshed metal.  Il like the early wheel model as well but I also feel they look a little more "190sl.ish"...

At our shop we actually used one of those to feed our shop dog, the Grunge Hound. When he got bigger we had to switch to a rear brake drum because he would cary the hub cap into the office when it was empty.

The center caps are plastic so they don't take much abuse. I think these rims are chrome plated on your car - something I'm not all that fond of. Small cracks will appear over time because the chrome is so much harder than the softer aluminium underneath. Eventually the cracks will open up with blisters. Keping them clean will pretty much take care of that ever happening.

I'd like to have met the grunge hound. Sounds about as smart as Benson my new dog. Old white one passed on over a year ago.

These wheels became options on the 280Sls in 1970, also they were not chrome.  Would be incorrect to use on SLs earlier, if you want to keep original.  The correct MB part numbers for the optional wheels is
#108 400 09 02.  They were painted wheels.

Dr. Benz : the wheels are not chrome but aluminum polished.
