Engine compartment decals
« on: June 14, 2007, 19:15:47 »
Does anyone know about the decals that were placed on the expansion tank by MB? Did 68 280SL's have different decals than 69 280SL's?
Are these still reproduced and by whom?
What about other decals...their eact placement.
Thank you,
Doc Mancini

Bob Geco, a member of the forum, reproduces the decals and sells them as a set. He should be able to provide you the location information. I am not sure off the top about the exact placement. I don't think there was a difference, but there may some European/USA items.

I just purchased a set of decals off of ebay. I would like to know exactly where they get placed as well.

I have a question on the same topic.  I've got several expansion tank labels that must have come in different kits.  I have two versions of the larger one (white w/red print & yellow w/red print) and three versions of the smaller label (white w/red print & yellow w/red print & red w/white print).  The red w/white print seems to mix another language with english (Nur Locking Cap with "100" Classification Number).  Does anyone know if the different colors were for different years?  Have a look at the photos.  Also, is a valve clearance decal correct for any of the Pagodas?
Thanks, Brian

To answer John's question the square decal part # DB-teil Nr.00 584 1840 replaced The part # 000
584 8540 "Vorsicht" yellow decal starting in 1966 and continued till 1968 with a Red square decal
advising owners to use  only "100" specification cap on the high pressure cooling system.

In 1969 mid year the same decal with, same part # 00 584 1840 was modified with bolder print red lettering with a red border and white background and used again. till the end of production in 1971. these early decals were paper with a gum backing and effected by solvents, petroleum products and steam and pressure washing of the engine bay.

It is intresting to note that the same decal with the same part number was used on the R-107 450SL to 560SL production that ended in 1989 in a reduced size format.
Some of the good after market decals offered to restorers are improved with a low sheen clear and a high temperature gum backing for improved durability. Offering the orginal look as they did when these cars were new.
