rear brakes

My rear brake cylinder is leaking,can I remove the cylinder without dismantling the whole brake assembley any other advice would be appreciated.Many thanks.Mike Rutledge

Mike .... Yes, you can remove the rear brake cylinder without draining the system.  Either plug the brake line or collapse  the rubber brake hose with vise-grips.

Hello Michael,

I Believe you will need to remove the brake shoes at the very least. You can hone and clean up the cylinder in place.  The actual cylinder size is in inches. The rubber seal cups and rubber covers can be purchased at NAPA or most auto stores for around $5 a side, after you figure out the diameter. Save the original hard parts to clean up and re-use. Fresh brake hoses are always a good investment if they are old.

Don't screw around with old leaking brake cylinders. The 3/4 inch cups are usually hard to find and you need a brake hone with only two stones on it to clean the cyinder which usually continues to leak anyways. The surface of new cylinders is very smooth and it can't be reproduced with a brake hone.

You want good advice? Get a new one.
