Retractable seat belts --- measurements?
« on: August 20, 2008, 08:37:29 »
I have read all the different posts, Now I am looking to purchase the seat belts.  The only gentleman on EBAY wants $350+ shipping for the set.  That seems awful expensive.  Does someone have the measurements so I can get an aftermarket set and mount them?  I am going to cut my rear vinyl pieces to hide them so I am not so concerned with originality... more safety!

Thanks, Bob

Baron, take a look at the restored cars on Motoring Investments.  Here they used belts from a later model sl.

Bob,

What price your life?

The set of factory belts I had installed back about 8 years ago cost more than this for the set; I believe the price was something on order of $200 (+/-) for each set.

My own personal opinion is not to try and become a safety engineer for the sake of saving money.  Go with a proven installation that someone else has already done, using accepted mounted points and a known belt set.  Put another way, try not to create an installation using just a set of belts you may have obtained at a discounted price.

At the time of my install, I had not seen anything; I had only heard of the factory bulletin on the subject and that's what I went with.  Since then some restorers have thought this either inelegant or too expensive and have devised other solutions, but there are enough various solutions out there that one does not need to reinvent the wheel so to speak.  Just my opinion.

Mine doesn't have an inertial reel. Isn't the downside to that setup that the reel further reduces rearward seat travel? I'm already maxed out and still feel cramped up against the steering wheel.

Personally I like the standard Kangol seatbelts.

Not if you place under the parcel shelf as shown in the pictures in the quoted topic.
