Handle?

Another dumb question from the new guy....

My '69 280SL has the side facing jump seat (on my car behind the driver!)

On the "front" of that seat, just under the padding (under/between your thighs and facing your knees if you were sitting in the seat) is what looks like a metal handle

I've tried pulling it, and nothing happens. I've had a look at the surrounding carpeting and can see no gaps etc

Any thoughts? Is it a handle or a handy place to secure the dog leash?

Or are you talking about the metal bars that the removable wooden floor sections clip to?

Tosh,
There should be one on each side of the drive shaft tunnel.  They are there for the carpeted wooden shelves to clip on to.  Since your seat is backwards from every other one that I've seen pictures of (unless you have a Right Hand Drive car), I would assume your seat was "home made" by someone.

Does your third seat have a back rest?
If yes, where is the chrome handle that opens the soft top boot?
If no, doesn't the passenger hate getting the soft top boot handle stuck in their back?
Does your data card indicate the third seat?

I am driving a right hand drive - we do that in London! So the jump seat is behind the driver and the chrome handle for the soft-top cover is on the side-wall behind the passenger (left side of the car). No data card yet, it's on request from Stuttgart. I have worked out that I have far from original colour carpets (and leather). Possibly hood. When the weather perks up a bit here I'll get the camera out and post a few pics

The upshot is that it's not a handle but a bracket to clip the shelf to. That'd be the shelf I don't have! -

And should I treat said bracket as a handle, my 280 will fall to bits after ejecting the jump seat (and contents)

Tosh, all of the helpful advice to one side, I just want to know why you'd let a dog inside your lovely motor?........

I wouldn't. Just wondering whether our friends in Stuttgart had engineered for that 40 years ago!

I did let a child sit in the back on the weekend. Only for a minute though. And put coats down first . And I wouldn't dream of driving with a child in the back.

My dog Merry (a wonderful Border Collie who is no longer with us) loved riding in the 230SL as much as I do.  This was taken at the first San Jose, CA. get-together.  (We were on our way to Carmel for the weekend, and I told her to stay in the car.)  

It's true that I got some dog hair in the car, but it was a small price to pay for driving the 113 through the Santa Cruz mountains, followed by a hike through the redwoods with my dog...

OK David (and all other dog lovers out there), I surrender: who can argue when you had such a good looking hound - and when you went to so much trouble to colour co-ordinate dog and interior!

I was also very interested to note your plates: are they standard issue plates for California? Leaving aside the special number, the 'font' seems distinctly European, as does the badgework between 66 and 230 (which I can't quite work out). If they are not standard issue, how do you secure them, and at what cost (if I may be so nosy)? Can you leave them on the car all the time?
