When I first got my 280 I replaced the weeping fuel pump with one I bought on ebay.  I went with the used "refurbished" unit because it would keep the "correct" old style pump and cost about half what the new ($700+) pump was going to cost.  After a couple years of poor performance I finally had the fuel rate measured.  It was about 1/4 of what the new one delivers.  Lesson learned.

Are the old style ones easy to rebuild yourself?  I think there have been some topic discussions on that and some DIY instructions floating about.

These pumps are rebuildable.  I think what you need to be careful about is buying anything that says it is "re-furbished". This can mean any number of things from just a cosmetic clean-up to a complete tear -down and parts replacement. This is one of the reasons I would recommend doing the rebuild yourself on this pump--it is fairly easy and you know the job will be done right. See the tech manual for how to do it.
