New Bosch Fuel Pumps
« on: September 11, 2008, 15:44:37 »
Has anyone purchased and installed the "new" Bosch fuel pump?  Apparently it's a bit larger than the original and requires a different mounting bracket, bushings, etc.  How has the performance been?

The newer, small style pump uses an adaptor bracket to attach to the original cross bracket attached to the frame. It also requires 3 rubber bumpers that have a smaller screw attachment than the original bumpers.

I have a new fuel pump on my car.  It works fine, except that the inlets and outlets are in different places and the bottom of the pump is a bit lower than the original, so the protective can won't fit over the pump without fairly major modification.

Nate,

This is the precise reason why many of the fuel pump cages on cars are either missing or "butchered"; it was because of the fuel pump replacement.  Rather than do the job properly and change the cage/cover too, thrifty owners and mechanics started taking metal cutting tools to the otherwise sanguine older fuel pump cover, or worse, throw it out completely.  Yes, I was a victim too.

George Des has been offering advice and even parts on rebuilding fuel pumps, so before you invest in an expensive new style pump, you might investigate this and preserve the integrity of your fuel pump cover and also avoid the pitfalls of not having the right adapter brackets and mounting parts.

Thanks Mike and George.  This is extremely helpful and it's pretty clear I don't want to go with the newer larger size pump.  Thanks for helping me avoid what would have been a big mistake.
