Getrag 265 conversion
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:07:59 »
Hello,

i am an owner of an 230SL 1964 in Europe-Austria. My car has 4 speed transmission and i am interested to replace it by a Getrag 265, that i have bought recently.
I have read some threads about conversions in this forum.
My question is: Does anybody have the measures of the adapter plate, that is necessary between bellhousing and transmission ? I think this adapter plate has to fit very ecxactly.

Best regards Franz Waiß

Hi,
I made one a few months ago but unfortunately my car is still being painted so I have not had a chance to install it.

Thickness is 15mm.  I retained the Getrag front casting and sawed off the tube the clutch release bearing rides on leaving the area for the shaft oil seal. This will leave the getrag transmission sealed. Then I made the plate to match the front of the transmission cutting around the front casting. Then I bolted the plate to the transmission using bolts through the transmission.

I bolted the clutch release bearing tube from the Mercedes transmission to the clutch housing(Bellhousing) and then slid the bellhousing over the getrag input shaft, centered it, then marked the holes for the Bellhousing attaching bolts.

One word of caution: The bolt holes for the bell housing and the transmission are very close together in the spacer plate. If you are not carefull they will overlap and interfere with one another.

Beside that the pilot bearing(the bearing in the back of the engine crankshaft) area of the Getrag is smaller than the Mercedes. I spent hours looking for a bearing with no luck and I ended up having a bushing turned specially to take up the difference.
