1st place for a Tom Colitt restoration
« on: September 14, 2008, 20:33:44 »
Congratulations are in order for Tom Colitt!  Tom's  restoration of a beautiful blue 1969 280SL automatic took 1st place today at the "Classics for Charity 15" event held by Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills.  In a difficult class of Mercedes Benz from 1962 to 1971, Tom's work was judged best.  Other cars in the cless included a 1955 300SL gullwing, a 1961 300SL roadster, 4 280SE 3.5 convertibles, 2 280SE convertibles (6 cylinder), a trailored 190SL, a couple of 113's, a 600 with 3,800 original miles and a 1971 350SL.
Not certain that a 113 would impress the judges, Tom's attention to detail and execution proved that the "Big Boys" don't always take the prize! Very impressive, Tom. Great work.

TR is right. It's not easy winning against cars like 300SL's. Makes all the effort seem worth while.

Wow. Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the kind words and it does make the 1 1/2 years job seem worth it. Luckily the owner of the car, Dr. Steven Nagelberg has been extremely supportive as well and has always trusted me to restore the car my way. I place much emphasis on restoring parts or replacing them with used or NOS ones, rather than the currently available ones and I'm glad that the judges liked it. They still docked us 1 point out of 25 for having the typical W113 runs inside the hood (which I was sure to preserve)  :-)

I'll upload pictures as soon as I have a chance.

Joe

Of course much thanks goes to you for my quick introduction to Pagodas, for all the advice you have always generously given to me. Since the days of the W113 group, this forum too, has done its part to constantly help me uncover valuable information.

Achim. Schoene Gruesse nach Machdeburch, wie wir in Berlin sagen ;-)

I tried to enclose some pictures, but I get a message that .jpg
files are not allowed and that the file size 350kb is too large. Is this true?

Hi Tom,
you can only upload files smaller than 256K.  The .jpg file extension is the one you want, but to quote the FAQ:
"Do not use "spaces" in the filename, or any other characters than letters, numbers and underscores "_". They will give problems."

Tom, congrats!  The car looks stunning.  Are those the Coker tires?

Thanks.
Yes, they are Coker "Phoenix" tires. These are the same as those now offered by MB as the "correct" reproduction tire for a Pagoda. Oddly, they are only R rated?...

The tires say 185 R14 not HR14...

Also, they are tubeless, not tube type, as are the originals...

Tom that is an absolutely beautiful car- and would present a dilemma.  How could you drive the car- each outing would incrementally age that perfect specimen.

I was a participant in yesterday's Fairfield Concours on the field with 5 Amelia Island winners, a Ralph Lauren perfect ferrari  and many others beautiful and classic cars.  Very few had any "patina" of use as mine does. Most looked like they just left the factory.   I see my pagoda as a relatively nice yet usable car, but not really a show car- try as I might.  I do find though that there are so many people who stop to look at the car.  It was the only pagoda and MANY people wanted to share their pagoda stories and it seems to evoke emotion.  I'm trying to pin down a demographic and I usualy see the early 40 something males with small children in tow have the most interest.  I do percieve the car as an obtainable classic and perhaps by then most males have gotten the performance sports car out of their system.

I tend to agree with that perception --but that 356 speedster looked pretty nice......

Thank you Peter, Hauser and Doug

Doug, of course you have helped me more than once too regarding details of the leather interior of a Pagoda you once owned, which I put to good use in the restoration of this project.

I don't want to forget the continuous help of David Gallon, my friend and parts supplier from San Diego, who is as much of a detail and originality nut as I am and always has been willing to answer or debate the most obscure detail with me.

I should also remember Tom LeClerc, who died only early this year of Lou Gehrig's disease, after spending many years restoring his own 230SL. We had only just met when he contacted me to finish out some things on his 230SL late last year, so that he could enter his final work at the Newport Beach car show (at Strawberry Fields golf course in Irvine). He received a second place finish against some tough competition, in a class judged by Tom Hanson, Scott Melnik and Bob Geco, mostly because he had to convert his car to an automatic transmission in order to be able to drive it. Unfortunately, he never was able to drive it anyway. Tom LeClerc had the good sense to track down several of the last remaining, brand new, original honeycomb-style firewall paddings in the 1980s and I was able to get two sets, which he had offered to our forum members at $2500 a set (a fair price).

Anyway, now I am back to continuing development of my M130E 3.0L engine. I have been developing a special camshaft together with the famed performance cam people at Isky cams. It is based on the European spec cam and adapted to the greater air requirements of the 3.0L engine. Early horsepower tests of the engine using the standard US spec cam have been very encouraging and the engine pulls considerably stronger than stock, from low to high RPM. I will report more as soon as I have done tests with the new cam.

I'm sad to hear this news. A few years back, I bought some of the original parts off his 230SL, and he was great to deal with.  As I recall, he put up an almost superhuman effort in restoring his 230SL (we have a thread somewhere here with his restoration photos). He was definitely full of passion for these cars.
