I have partially removed the gearshift cover (automatic), but can not figure how to completely remove it from the gear hanle. Does the round black (or white) know unscrew?? Mine doesn't seem to want to come off

The knob on my 71 280sl has vertical slots in the plastic that coincide with vertical slots in the stick.  A good sharp tug should get it off.  These shift knobs are still available for short $ ($20 I recall) so while you want to be careful, don't be too worried about damaging the ball.

Take a small rag and rap it around the top of the ball shift knob. Then take an opoen end ajustable pliers and carefully pull up and away from the center the top of the shift knob should pop off and allow you to remove the bottom . When you go to install the shift knob put the bottom end on first than snap on the top of the shift knob .
