Did some of the white steering wheels come with horn pads with the padded part white, or was this part always the same leather/vinyl color as the upholstery?

The center pad on a white steering wheel was originally a cream color vinyl. They are only in other colors or leather if they have been recovered. I cringe when I see them covered to match the interior, but appearantly other people like it.

Does anyone have experience disassembling the horn pad  (backing, chrome ring, center medallion)?  I want to "refresh" the vinyl part of the pad with some vinyl spray, and would like to take it apart if it can be done non-destrucively.

Search is your friend... and much improved over the old site.  Alfred Esser has written much about it: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=6502.0

Also check the Technical Manual: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Interior.SteeringWheel

But if you use the search function (at the top left) and enter " Horn Pad"  you'll find many more relevant topics.

Hello Paul - - - Alfred and I worked together on this same little project earlier this year. These photos will be helpful. His is white mine is maroon.

CAUTION: be very careful when unbending the retention tabs of the trim ring. They  break off easily.  I can send you the die pieces like I did for Alfred.
