License Plate Numbers in Pictures?
« on: February 01, 2009, 01:39:05 »
I've noticed that some people edit their pictures so their license plate numbers don't show.  I've done the same - but only because I've seen others do it.  How much of a threat is there in having your license plate number shown on a public forum?

I wouldn't bother obfuscating your plate. Just make sure your Pagoda is stored in a garage out of sight. Do not publicise personal details (address, phone number, or even e-mail address) publicly on this forum. Use the personal messaging features of this forum to initiate communication with someone else, and use that to exchange e-mail addresses for direct communication if you like. That will help prevent your e-mail address being harvested by spammers.

Well, in many countries in Europe, and perhaps other parts of the world, it is a very
quick matter to make a phone call to, or access online via Internet,
the vehicle registration authority with a licence plate registration number in hand -
and promptly receive from them the name and address of the vehicle owner :o

So, this I think is the reason why many automobile photos are edited in this manner.
Good practice IMHO

This is why I am glad that my Pagoda sits in a garage a few miles away from my home. So that if someone were to spot me driving and decide to try and track me down, they would get my name and home address rather than the garage location. So I think both Hans and Peter are correct; you are running the risk anytime you drive around, that someone will pick out your car for a later theft.

In Holland it's not easy to get info about ownership, or an address from a number plate unless you are:
  • either the owner of the licence plate and can prove it
  • or you are the law (the authorities)

That's why I'm not that concerned.
