Adjusting PS Pump belt tension
« on: February 04, 2009, 00:42:38 »
Okay, I'm stumped.  Removed my engine yesterday, and noticed the PS pump was very loose in its mounting.  It seems that the pump is secured in the mounting bracket via 2 socket-head bolts that are underneath the pulley.  After great effort, I got the pulley off  (used a standard bearing removal tool, the kind with a split circle that straddles the groove on the pulley hub... that, in conjuction with an impact gun finally broke it loose)

My confusion:  I don't see how those mounting bolts can be tightened except with the pulley off.  But, near as I can tell, you can't adjust the pump position (and hence belt tension) if those bolts are tight.  There is no way to get to the socket heads with the pulley installed.  Am I missing something here?

Hello Paul,

The bolts in front behind the pulley can be loosened with a skinny 17mm wrench but cannot removed with the pulley on. You will need to loosen one 14mm bolt at the rear/bottom of the pump also. Lastly the double 10mm jamb nuts can be loosened or tightened to adjust or remove the belt.

Thanks for that.  As I mentioned, my pump is secured with round, socket-head style bolts behind the pulley, that is why I was in a quandry, no way to get an allen wrench in there to turn them (I was even considering drilling a hole through the pulley to allow access).  I wonder if some P.O. replaced the original 17mm bolts with these?  I had noticed that the much-thicker socket-head bolts protrude so far out that it almost looks like the pulley is touching.

Now that you've confirmed these two bolts do have to be loosened for adjustment, I'll just replace the socket-heads with standard bolts, and my problem is solved.

I love this forum!
