Serial # stamped on hood
« on: February 07, 2009, 22:28:45 »
I have question to ask. Does anyone have a photo of thier hood serial number which is stamped on the under side reinforcement.
I was told my hood is not original due to the absence of this serial number. The car is a 1968 250SL.
Thank you.

The hood was made slightly oversize then shaped to fit the individual car during production. Each hood is stamped with the last three digits of the production number. Numbers are on the underside front edge of the hood left side.

Each hood is stamped with the last three digits of the production number.

I've also seen examples of the last 4 digits being used. Presumably, the 3-digit examples have an omitted leading 0 ?

Very helpful photo and information. My hood shows no sign of stamped numbers. It fits well but it is obviuosly not original.
Thank you for your posts.
