I’m getting ready to change my automatic transmission fluid. In past years I’ve used Quaker State Dexron II ATF for “Import Vehicles” (#406184), but it is no longer available. The current ATF nomenclature bears no resemblance to the Dexron II previously recommended to be used in place of the original “Type A” ATF. So far I’m seeing Dexron VI/Mercon which appears closest to Dexron II.
I’ve read Dr Dan’s input that all ATF’s are probably compatible but that was before the current crop of ATF’s appeared on the market.
My questions are:
1. Is Dexron VI/Mercon an acceptable alternative for our older vehicles?
2. Other than never/never using “Type F” (for Ford products only), are there any other ATF catagories that should be avoided?
