Ignition key

Hello, I inherited my Dad's 230SL, he only had (that I can find) 1 key and I would like to have an spare, where can I make one, I did go to autozone, Murrays etc and no one can make one and or have the blanks....

My suggestion is to keep looking, ask the places that don't have what you need who they can recommend.

A few years ago I walked into 'any-old-key-shoppe' and they made a new 280 SL door key using only the number off the old, broken-off one. It was in their computer's database, which really surprised me. But also, last year, I had to get a duplicate key made for a vault, and I had to go to six different locksmiths to end up at one that did have the blanks, and the skill, to duplicate my key.

If you know the key code (it is imprinted on the front of the original Neiman key and is listed on your data card and should look like Dxxxxx) the company will also cut it for you for an additional fee.

Or what about MBZ?  A0004620332 Ignition Key Blank $3.20

Too many people have told me the key costs around $50 - $60 even though Mercedes Benz has told me that the key blank is available for less than $5.  I'm going to try to order the blank as well as the glove box/trunk blank which is also supposedly available for a reasonable price.

Hi Graham,
unfortunately your number is not quite sufficient as Dave Gallon pointed out to me. You need to include in addition the four digit Amsel Code suffix to indicate which type of key blank (that is for which car) you need.
According to the Classic site, the following codes are available:
9604 - Neiman D
9659 - Neiman W
9662 - Neiman 8
9652 - Neiman M
For a 230SL you would specify 000 462 03 32 9604 and that costs a lot more than $3.20 - how about a list price of $63!!!  :o
And it is not cheaper to buy them in Europe either as shown in the screen shot below.
Or could it be that the Classic Center is willing to sell you a generic blank "under the table"?  8)

Undoubtably  you are correct but I only went on what my original MBZ parts manuals and the Classic Center told me.  The 230sl manual lists  the ignition key as part number 0004620332 and the 250sl/280sl parts manual uses the same part number with the note that the key is good up to 250sl 002979.  Interesting enough, I cannot find a part number for a late 250sl/280sl key in the 250sl/280sl parts manual.

As for the chance of an under the table deal from the Classic Center, I suppose that's a possibility but I've never had that sort of thing come up before with them.  It's more likely that I got someone on the phone that doesn't know what he's talking about.  In any case, I need an ignition key anyway so maybe I'll take the $3.20 chance and see what, if anything, I get from the Classic Center.

I would do the same, but please let us know how it turns out.  It is always nice to find a good price for an essential part.

According to the parts list for the 250/280SL, the ignition key (2-sided master key)  p/n is: 000 766 35 06 - but somehow the footnotes make no sense to me (Group 46, Fig. no. 110).  Footnote #5 says that this p/n is good for a 250SL up to chassis #3048 and footnote #8 indicates that the p/n is correct for a 280SL up to chassis # 12689. My guess is that it is a typo and that the the p/n is correct for a late 250SL from chassis #3048.
Especially since the same parts list shows the p/n 000 462 0332 to be valid for a ignition key blank up to chassis # 2979 as you wrote, and p/n 111 462 0132 for the actual ignition key also up to #2979.
Also when you buy the key from the Classic center could you find out whether they still have the original Neiman D blank?  The company is long, long gone and perhaps the price that is quoted on the web could be for a NOS Neiman blank.
