Timeless 1963 230SL?
« on: March 17, 2009, 04:30:41 »
Well, not quite the same car but fairly close. The first photo is from a 1963 brochure posted here a while back. The second -- my pride and joy!

And, the side-by-side reminds me of those kids puzzles we have in the local newspaper. Called Spot the Differences. Any one want to play? Using just the photos -- I know of 10. How many can you see?

I thought about putting the answers upside down at the bottom of the page but then you Australians would have an advantage!  :)

Clutch Resivior on the original
Antenna on your car
Fire pad is flush on the orginal yours is updated
No tranny dipstick
Original doesnt show a hood strap
Cold Start Valves and piping are different
No modulator vacume pipe to the intake on the original

Four hood bumpers on the firewall, but three on your car.

Dang. You guys are good! Well, Jesse nailed 9 of my 11. (plus a couple more!). JonnyB, you got one of them... The other one I had was:

-- mine has a firewall heater access plug (added much later by a bold mechanic. Never asked me but did fix my heater core...)

oh, and I guess since mine's an automatic, I have the CSS.

Good one Walt. I thought Jesse might have mentioned that: what's a modulator vacuum pipe?

Hey James,

The engine bay is looking sharp!  I hope we can lift a few hoods (and pints) in May and see it in person.

Hey Pete. Finally getting around to replying to you -- been too busy chasing a leprechaun under my dash...

Thanks, and aye to a pint -- possibly at the May PagodaFest? As for my engine bay -- fact is, I used the early photo above as inspiration for my winter project -- which was to spruce up the engine bay. In keeping with my driver-status, I did it my way (cheap) -- knowing that someday, I'll do it the right way. A few of the aficionados out there will cringe, but I think it came out ok. Lots of simple green, spray paint and some new clamps and rubber bits. I am hoping to write something up for Pagoda World (if the publishers are willing) but here are a couple other shots.

Hey James,

Looks great.  Those inner fender are really clean!  I like how they set off the engine and components.  Unfortunately the PO painted the inner fenders black when they changed the color of my car.  Someday I'll have to do something about that.
