"New Market" prices for Pagoda's
« on: March 23, 2009, 02:16:20 »
I just noticed Motroring Investments has the following notation on their web site:

"Please note - All prices have been lowered approx. 25% to reflect the "new" market."

I noticed that as well and also noticed they mention that the red 70' and white 71' are priced 30K lower than cars on their sold list in similar condition.   I am new to this site and in the process of searching for my first SL.  What can anyone tell me about Motoring Investments and the value you get from buying one of their cars.  I live in San Diego where they are located by the way.

401k's are 201's now.  Minus 25% sounds better.

Chris,

I think many here would view Motoring Investments as a very reputable, knowledgeable vendor-restorer, if I were looking to buy another pagoda, I would definitely check with them, I'd recommend you should, especially if you live in Ca. I have not dealt with them personally because I live far from them but would if the situation arose and I decided to buy another car.

With regard to your search..... IMHO and Generally speaking I think the better quality car you buy up front the better the value you get, doing it yourself is very rewarding but I'm not sure many get what they put into a car after a lot of expensive parts when they go to sell it unless they got a great deal up front.

Seems like this is a good time to be a buyer.

In my experience price is NOT a good indicator as to condition of the car.
I've seen great ones go cheap, and poor ones go for lots.
ALWAYS have the car looked at by in INDEPENDANT specialist before you buy it.
It's the only way.

Thanks everyone for the info.  Motoring investments has some nice ones but perhaps a bit above what I had expected to pay.  Does anyone have experience buying from dealers and how much negotiating room there generally is?  I know this depends on the car but just want some input.  I especially like the silver 67 250 listed for 59K. ???

Motoring Investments may be on the high side for some cars but I've also seen them offer cars at much less, I'm not connected in any way with them but that is my observation.... with them like many others I think it really depends on the car and it's condition.....

There are a number of good dealers out there but more often then not a lot of the dealers I've seen advertise regularly on ebay are selling high priced cars that look good in the photos but are nothing more then very overpriced cars that look great in the photos but when you look at them up close in person and examine the underside of the car, under the hood, and the common rust areas and so on you end up seeing problems from worrisome to nightmarish. I saw a car that looked really nice on ebay, it was listed for 35k and was described as a great car  but when I went to look at it it was just garbage not worth half that.

You also could very likely find a great car from a private seller, the key is knowing what to look for when it comes to problem areas and being familiar with what it will cost to bring the car to where you want it to be, if you have someone that knows the cars who can go with you or guide you that would be of great benefit. You are fortunate because there are people here that may be very willing to help you.

It also depends on what you want, if you want a car you can work on yourself that needs repairs you can do or are willing to pay someone to do for you that's one thing, if you want a car that looks perfect and needs little work that is another. I personally think it's better to try and find a car that has few problems up front and is in quality condition as opposed to a fixer upper that has many problems. Just because you can do the work does not mean it will save you money in the long run... it may be much better to spend a little more as opposed to buying a 10K car that needs a lot of attention, but again it depends on what you want and where you want to go with a car. You don't need to spend a fortune to get a good car if you shop around and know what you are buying and have realistic expectations.

Judging from the economy this is a good time to buy, I'd wager if you educate yourself on the car, spend time looking carefully at a number of cars, and have realistic expectations you should be able to get a car for a great price these days.  My 2 cents.....

Good Luck

Thanks Mark,

You echo many of my thoughts.  I plan to fully educate myself before buying and spend a good bit of time on this site.  I have also ordered some books.  I agree in that I would like a nice one up front and don't think I would save anything by fixing up a poor car.

Yes this is a very good time to buy collectible cars in the five figure range. The mid six figure and up cars haven't moved much on RM and BJ auctions. But I have seen some cars that had went for seventy or eighty thousand resale at twenty oercent less.

I meet Brian Peters, Motoring investments headman, and I can recommend to anyone his services. he knows very much of cars in general an a lot of Mercedes Benz cars.  He can tell you why he has cars that are valued 20K from another looking the same but valued at 40K.  He is a person you can trust.  that said call him make an appointment and talk to him and buy the best example your wallet can buy.  I bougth from him a 250C, 1972.

Good luck.

I second your opinion of Brian Peter, he is the most(perhaps the only) serious dealer when it comes to Pagodas that I know of.
When it comes the heading of this topic, Here's one example from "the new market" on this side of the pond:

Also on the Retroclassic car show in Stuttgart two weeks ago, Mechatronik offered a perfect(it was said, I wasn't there) restored 280 SL for 150K euro that apparently sold. Not sure for how much though.

Well, it's good to see some 'realists', especially since it's a dealer.  Many people are still asking "old world" prices and refusing to adapt.

I have met Brian Peters a couple of years back while I was searching for a pagoda.  He's a good guy and knows his stuff.  However, his pricing of his cars are very high... typically higher than market...  but he's a dealer and it's expected...

If I still lived in San Diego, I would use his services for my car.

Cheers,
Mike
