Greetings to all, just got a 1969 280SL.
« on: March 25, 2009, 03:32:47 »
Hello to all.
Well I am excited to say I landed a great one out there and at a fantastic $... after all my years of shopping .. it's the best overall deal I have ever come across.

Whats more amazing is it's my favorite color !!!  That and a certain "Baby Blue look" Not sure the official color #'s or quoted color names..

By the way, I have looked everywhere to find a page on the internet that would visually show the color options Mercedes Benz had for their 280SL's..

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY VIEW THE COLORS ON THE INTERNET?????

This is my first attempt to download a photo of the 69 280SL .. It is sooooooo very original... That color is straight from the factory! Governor bought it for his daughter, she had it three month's and then daddy sold it to a Big city Laywer and that has been where it's been every since..

He donated it to a Museum and that is where I come in.... OK LETS SEE IF THIS WORKS....

AHHHHH....OK finally found it...

Hello Wingding (or Wing, or Ding?  ;))
welcome to the group!  It is a lovely car, no wonder that you are so excited.
You can see almost all of the car colors that Mercedes offered for a 280SL right here on this site.
Go to the Technical Manual (third button from the left at the top of the window) and look up "Data cards and Codes" and then "Paint codes" and you'll see them:
http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/Start
If you have not received the data card for your car you can get one for free from the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine, CA.  Just follow the instructions in the manual under "Data cards".

Looks like DB834 Moss Green Metallic to me.

Congratulations, super car!

ps. you can make multiple posts to the same topic (so all your pictures might have been in the same topic, instead of spread out over multiple topics)

Sorry to all about spreading the mess of photo's over numerous posts... I was trying to figure how to get it all on one but it only allows 4 photo's... Never thought to ADD to a thread started! DUH!  .... Actually took me a while just to figure how to send a photo .... I was navigating poorly and did not get to the "Additional options" for quite a while ... Once there, I was familiar but could not figure how to send it all those photo's on 1 post.  Hey ... Old school here... no computer class for me... But, I'll learn!

By the way, Thanks 66and Blue, That was a incredible tour through the sl113 Pagoda SL Group section on color options.. It was sooooooooo good! I was so impressed, I stayed up till 3 something in the morning... I could not get away from that page.
You know, I actually found something else online that showed paint manufacturer's colors, displayed... But it was truly shocking how the display here is sooooooooooooooooooooooo much more realistic! A truly incredible job of displaying color through a internet page.... The car combinations are a work of art....
You can truly see "Light Blue" much more realistically here then the "squares" of color the manufactures display..

Matter of fact ..I need to go back there and spend another three hours in glorious Bliss...... what a great place to be!

Wagas, I sure hope you are right....!     Because if it's not.... we have a problem... The "Other" possible green was factory applied through the 1968 models.... This is a 1969. Now BD 834 Moss green metallic covered this year....
I am at distance from this honey right now or the mystery would be over... But Im with you.... Moss green metallic... {I just love it, too!} Would not want it any other color........ The second favorite is that light Blue.

I am going to try and attach the Car Paint Manufacturer chart here so everyone can see how difficult it is to really "SEE" the color... Thank goodness Pagoda SL has a SUPERIOR Visual aid here.... Got to be the best on the internet planet bar none!

How's it going Douglas,
Actually it was from the state of Arkansas... of all places....
A governor, bought it for his daughter... But sold it 3 month's latter....... To a attorney, who has had it ever since. Then he donated it to a museum and thats where I come in....

.....Im guessing "Daughter" must have done something to "UPSET" the Governor.....cause it sure did not last long!

Im still somewhat in shock....... I've looked hard and long...... Overall, this is the best I have seen in ages......That would be overall shape-wear-mechanical- and the extra's....
It has also got the softop.....

One thing I've learned over the years is that each of these cars has an interesting story behind it. Sometimes many stories.

Congrats again on the purchase. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we need to see more pix! Details, please.

Looks like DB834 Moss Green Metallic to me.

I was happy to come across this thread. I have my late father's 1970 280SL and wasn't sure what the factory paint scheme name was.
After looking through the other "colour" thread was starting to wonder if it was a standard colour! Hadn't seen any others yet.
Good to see another one out there!

Doug, that is the finest looking 280SL !   I am amazed... Well that's the second I've seen now ... Probably the last time was about the mid 70's.... 1975 seems to be about right.... There cannot be to many "DB 834 Metallic Moss Green 280SL's out there....
The color was not offered to the 230SL or 250SL ... It did cover the full production of the 280SL's however...But I am guessing not to many went to the DB 834 Vat Dip...........

By the way .... sweet rims!!!! I was checking those out and wondering how they would look as a "occasional attitude change" .... Is that the silver or chrome Doug ?.... It's hard to tell with the sun angle....
Do they fit well, no clearance problem to deal with?

Looks like this is where the "DB 834 pagoda club" is meeting these days.... so... how's this for rarity: a 1965 230SL in DB 834  ;)
http://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/Waqas/20049116744_waqas230slfogs.jpg

Original colour was DB 268 blau-grun, but previous owners dad re-sprayed in DB 834. I'm currently restoring it, and I'm perpetually confused about which colour to go with the [eventual] repaint.... given that I already have a 250SE coupe in DB 268, and I still fancy DB 834 (insert ye old original vs. unoriginal colour debate here).
Nothing bizarre about colour-matching the entire stable, is there?  :o

Thanks "Wing"! Those are the standard accessory MB alloy rims which originally came with car. They have a silver finish to them.
Search through a few photos here and you will see them on a number of 113's and even later SL's.
Enjoy YOUR new wheels!

Congratulations Wingding!  Looks like Moss Green Metallic to me.  The chart you are looking for is right here in our Technical Manual.  http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/PaintCodes  Scroll down to the bottom to see it.

There's a small plate on the left side of the engine compartment near the master cylinder (assuming left hand drive) that shows the VIN and the paint code.  Tell us what you find.

psmith,
indeed... as soon as I am in possesion of this 280sl, I will give a full account of what information I find and a  whole lot more closeups of all the vital area's. Right now I am about 1600 miles away.....

I am hoping that is original carpeting.... I also have not seen that combination.

Looking foward to getting my hands on it...!

Indeed I will John.... I am just at the age where I have the time to attend future outtings and really get into the Mercedes Benz 280SL.. Putting time into it and enjoying the learning process......and I am still plenty young enough to enjoy it... Well at least i think I am young enough!

This is a powerful site with loads of  info and a incredibly good future outtings connection. The expertise gained from a vast area's of talent from body to electrical- Mechanical is priceless...

I would be beyond hard pressed to find a site equal to this....  It sure was nice to see that this 280SL which I consider the finest looking automobile I have ever seen in my life.....is equally cherished by a vast quantity of people!

Now.......... about the ride !...........
