1967 250SL - Thinking about buying
« on: April 10, 2009, 00:48:35 »
I have been casually shopping for a SL and just came across what appears to be a good car.  It is a 1967 250SL California car (just a hard top).  The car is silver with black interior and seems to be in nice condition with original paint (minor scratches and a few dings).  Interior is nice as well.  The owner said he is the second owner and has had it for 10 years.  It has 102,000 on the odo and he said that it is in KM so it translates to approx 64k.  Did these cars come in KM vs K?  The car started right up and ran nice, it is a 4 speed manual.  It has an aftermarket radio, aftermarket power antenna and ignition, otherwise the car looks original.  It did not have any visable rust, but I did not get under the car.  He is asking $15,800 - thoughts??

Do a whole bunch of reading on the forum first of all.   Have it checked by a mechanic also.  You want to find out what the rust situation really is and you want to have some mechanical inspection done including exhaust gas analysis, which may tell you if the injection pump is doing something wrong which is expensive to fix.   Read Read Read.  Don't rush it.

Scoot - thanks for the information.  If the car checks out good, what do you think about the pricing?

Sounds low if it is as you describe.  Mileage isn't as much of an issue in these cars.  They're old so they should have some miles on them, but they are built well.  All the mechanical things can be fixed, but major rust can be a show stopper.
