OK my fellow Pagodaphiles. I found these today on my 66 230SL. I would have had no idea as to what they are had I not found them myself. Can anyone out there tell me what these are? Winner will earn the global respect of our membership. I'll bet no clues are needed with this group.

I am guessing that if you found them under the hood they might be plastic dust caps for a part before it is installed in the vehicle. Did you install a new brake master cylinder lately?

Seat belt anchor bolt plugs?

Bingo!! That was quick. Naj, I would imagine these anchor bolt covers are found on true seat belt delete cars. You are awesome. I have noticed on many data cards that the 431 and 434 codes are not marked, yet these cars have seatbelts. I am curious how MB would know when to delete the seat belts. Were seat belts standard after a certain year?

That item is foreign to my '64. there were no accommodations for seat belts then, mine is a euro, so it might be in -65. Wait! I have a modification listing that tells when seat belts were added..... All I can find is @ #15693 (18/3/66) floor changed to accommodate 3 point safety belt harness. no idea the start of seat belts originally.

I thought the part was bogus.

My April '65 230 had anchor plates for lap belts but I don't recall it having these plugs.

3 point belts were fitted by the current owner in 2005 (I think).

The plugs came off of my late production (Sept 66) 1966 230SL. I installed a set of NOS Kangols (very expensive!!) and found the plugs. They were in the bolt holes next to the floor center console. All of the proper factory threaded seat belt bolt holes were present on the car, which made the installation of the seat belts very easy. They look great.

Come on, John! Shvegel was close in that he guessed it was a non-functional part designed and installed to plug a hole! He may not have been "right" but he wasn't "not even close". Give him props.

Hi John

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say that they are the same as the seat belt bolts. The bolts you found and shown in the pictures are made of Black plastic and are, of course only used in that location on Pagodas, to plug the factory installed seat belt anchor reinforcement plates against intrusion of water.

Hi Tom,
I was only referring to the question that asked the size and thread pattern. I figured that they must be the same pattern as the seatbelt anchor bolts since they fit perfectly into the threaded seatbelt holes.

Seat beelts were requiired by law in the US starting with the 1967 model year. Remember Nader`s book ;Unsafe at any Speed; came out in the mid-60's.

Also, the 1967 model year was the start of unleaded gas in the US.

Impact bumpers came in 1973, just as the R107 was rolling out. Remember, no 1972 W113 or R107.

Generally, I don't study history--can't see much future in it.

The thead bolt size on contemporay MBZ's was 11M X 1.75, When I put seat belts in my 230SL I could not find a tap. the size is excatly the same as a good old 7/16 X 20!

Part number 000 990 13 22, as already reported 7/16 thread. Applicable to 230SL from 006055 with some exceptions and additions. Just FYI, prior to 230SL production, other 1960s MBs used a 000 990 12 22 plug with a 10mm thread.

Are you sure about that? 20 threads per inch comes out to 1.27mm pitch and 7/16 is larger than 11mm diameter. ...

I'm just going thru this exercise.

Seat belt bolts and anchors are to an agreed standard size. 7/16" UNF.
Had to go look far AF wrenches too
