Accelerator rod linkage
« on: June 06, 2009, 00:58:11 »
I need some assistance here.  I just installed my motor last sunday.  Took me only 3 hours woo hoo. I started to setup linkages and I noticed my control rod that is connected to the accelerator pedal is way too long.  I looked at some pictures and compared them to someones complete 280 restoration it seems like my rod is too long by 2-3 inches.  I replaced my motor with a period correct 230sl motor.  I had a 250 in it and the rod seemed fine. I had no throttle issues before with the 250.  I tried to set the 230 up correctly based off the pictures and the manual but the rod moves an 1inch forward and then stops on the shaft it rides off of on the engine block by the motor mount. he 2 ball lever seems to be the same as the 250.  I have both of them.  The only difference is that one is part of the cover and the other is attached to the motor mount.  Were there different size rods for the 3 engines we had? Short of cutting it I see no way to fix this.  Does someone have the correct rod?  Thanks for the help

Are you talking about the rod with the loop at the firewall end with a big rubber bush?
What is your chassis #? There was a change at 042 012466.

Are you sure you have the lever arm with the 2 balls correctly mounted? The arms are unequal lengths.

Naj yes you are correct.  I am talking about the control rod with the rubber bushing.  I have the ends setup correctly and I verified ithe lever placement with some previous pictures and ones I have seen on the internet.  My chassis is 12261 and my motor is 5597 with the correct prefix for the 230sl motor.  Any ideas on what has happened here?  Thanks.

does the 230 motor have tube headers, that are relpacing the 250's cast iron exaust maniflods?
I have a vague memory of once replacing a broken set of tube headers in an early 230 with the iron manifolds, and there were modifications that had to be made to the throttle linkage.

All
I called Dr Benz and he helped me through the issue.  I do have headers.  I didnt realize I had to use my original bracket.  I had 2 others but they were wrong.  My bracket actually bolts up to the side cover more forward then the others.  Metric gave me an aluminum cover with a shaft and it was obviously wrong for my car.  I had to put a standard cover on it and I set the bracket up correctly and now I have full movement of my linkage.  I should have the motor together in the next 2 weeks.  I am polishing the cam cover to dress up the new motor.  Thanks for the continued help

Yes this was the piece of the puzzle that I  was missing.  I found it and was able to install my headers, intake, and exaust today.  The motor is really taken shape.  I poloshed my cam cover and it sure looks pretty now with the rebuilt motor.  Thanks for the help.

The early system has a longer rod to the bell crank than the later system with cast iron manifolds ( I'd say about an inch or more ). The actual placement for the two screws is at the 6 and 4 o'clock position on the early system while the later aluminium plate has a pin placed at about  8 o'clock position as seen from the right side of the block.
