What mercedes engine would fit (till I rebuild the original)

Is there any easy swap? Any engine from a newer mercedes (80's, 90's) which I can buy for cheap (including the whole car).
I think I could live without the rev-counter for the while. I do not plan to drill any holes or do anything irreversible. The transmission would probably remain original.

Sorry but engines that came after the M130E (280se-280sl) don't bolt up to the transmission or share the same engine mounting points.
It would not be a bolt in conversion.

What about creating a simple conversion plate for the transmission or some extra construction for the mounting points?
Again, I do not wish to do anything irreversible, I plan to put the original engine back. I was only tempted by the fact that 80's and 90's mercedeses cost almost nothing and their engines surely run fine.

I think that the assumption that an 80's / 90's engine runs fine is quite a stretch.

Oh, no. I think for example the W124 series is virtually undestroyable. And a crashed but still running car should not be a problem to find. Only if the pagoda could adopt such engine...

It is true that cheap Merc engines in good arder are easy to find but that's where the reality ends I'm afraid!
Swapping the engine is certainly possible and not too difficult for a competent technician, but certainly not without modification.
Search on here for a chap in Australia who successfully installed a103 engine. (Personally I would have fitted a 104 but that another story.)

An M110 won't do?  It should be a drop in swap. -CTH
